On September 21, 1969 the much anticipated NFL season began for the Washington Redskins. It marked the debut of the great Vince Lombardi as head coach of this franchise. He and his team did not disappoint as they won their opener on the road at New Orleans, 26-20. Sonny Jurgensen threw 3 TD passes (2 to Charley Taylor and 1 to Jerry Smith) with no interceptions to lead the team to victory. Despite suffering a slump in November, the Skins achieved their first winning season (7-5-2) in 14 years. Sadly their leader, Vince Lombardi, succumbed to cancer less than a year later.
