Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach made an unorthodox move in 2018 when he traded to acquire an undrafted free agent corner from the Dallas Cowboys. The decision to add Charvarius Ward came under some outside criticism. Many thought the Chiefs might have a shot at him during roster cuts, but they had low waiver claim priority. When Ward didn't make much of an impact early on, amid defensive struggles for the Chiefs, there were some questions about why he was acquired. Against the Seahawks in Week 16, Ward got his first chance to start for the Chiefs. It was an opportunity that led to Ward starting the remainder of the season, including during the playoffs. Ward spoke of that opportunity
