Drew Silva explains how San Diego Padres 1B Luke Voit has salvaged his fantasy value and why he should be rostered in the meantime.
- Luke Voit has slid off the fantasy radar in the years since he led all of Major League Baseball in homeruns during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He battled injuries and inconsistency in 2021, and those struggles carried over into his first couple of months with the Padres in 2022.
But the 31-year-old slugger has quietly, or maybe not so quietly, gone on a tear over the last handful of weeks, boasting a 294 average and 949 OPS over his last 92 plate appearances dating back to the final day of May. He has six home runs and 21 RBIs in 20 games across that same span.
And if you shrink the sample size down to his last 11 games, you'll find four homers, eight doubles, 14 RBIs and nine runs scored. He's been an extra base hit machine. This surge has vaulted Voit into the cleanup spot for the Padres, who carry the fifth best winning percentage of all 30 teams as of June 19 and are quickly approaching the Dodgers at the top of the NLS standings.
If they're going to pull off a surprise finish in that division, Voit will likely be a big part of it. He should be rostered everywhere in fantasy in the meantime.
