LSU’s bullpen implodes as Mississippi State takes Game 2

Ty Floyd took the mound as the Tigers looked to take the series against Mississippi State at Alex Box Stadium, but struggles in the bullpen cost LSU Game 2 in an 9-4 loss. Coach Jay Johnson’s team will look to avoid a second-straight series loss on Sunday.

LSU scored first on a bases-loaded walk to Jordan Thompson to give LSU an early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers extended that lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Hayden Travinski hit a bomb to left field to make it 2-0 Tigers after four innings.

The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI double to cut the lead in half. Nate Ackenhausen came into the game for Floyd in the top of the seventh inning. Floyd went six innings allowing five hits and one run on a walk and 10 strikeouts. An outstanding start from Floyd is just what the doctor ordered.

Ackenhausen was met with a solo homer by the first hitter he faced and the game was tied 2-2. Ackenhausen was able to get a strikeout to end the inning and limit the damage to only one run as we headed to the bottom of the seventh. Tommy White broke the tie with an RBI single with the bases loaded to give the Tigers the lead. Cade Beloso then grounded into a double play, but it scored Tre Morgan to give LSU a 4-2 lead.

Thatcher Hurd took the mound to start the eighth inning as he looked to keep the Tigers in the lead. The first batter he faced hit a double and the second batter hit a homer to tie the game 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning. After a walk and a single to the next two hitters, State hit an RBI single to left to give them a 5-4 lead.

Riley Cooper then entered the game for Hurd. After retiring the first two batters he faced, the Bulldogs hit a three-run homer to extend their lead to 8-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.

LSU was unable to score any runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Tigers dropped Game 2 9-4. Game three of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
