The Los Angeles Chargers donated $250,000 to the American Red Cross this week to help the thousands of people impacted by the massive wildfires in Southern California, the team announced on Friday.

The donation, the team said, will help provide supplies and help send disaster workers to those affected by the Woolsey and Hill fires in the Los Angeles area.

“It’s been absolutely heartbreaking to watch the destruction these fires have inflicted on our local community,” Chargers president of business operations A.G. Spanos said in a statement. “Forcing more than a quarter million residents to evacuate and seek safety and shelter elsewhere, this disaster has seen hundreds of families lose their homes and have their lives turned upside down. The Chargers are proud to partner with the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, health services and immediate support to Angelenos with nowhere else to turn in the face of this widespread devastation.”

The Woolsey Fire started last week north of Los Angeles. As of Friday morning, the fire has burned nearly 99,000 acres, forced thousands to evacuate from their homes — including the entire city of Malibu — and killed three people, according to CBS News. It is currently nearly 70 percent contained.

The Hill Fire, which started just before the Woolsey Fire, burned more than 4,500 acres in Ventura County. It has been completely contained.

The Camp Fire in Northern California has burned more than 142,000 acres and killed 63 people as of Friday morning, and is only about 45 percent contained. It is the deadliest wildfire in California history.
