Look Back ... to honored names at JHS football banquet, 1949

Mar. 11—March 11, 1949, in The Star: The annual football banquet for Jacksonville High School was held a few nights ago in the high school lunchroom. Bob Dillon, a senior and a member of the football and basketball teams, was toastmaster. The high school coaches, Earnest V. Newman, E. C. Wilson and Louie Edison, were introduced and Newman, as head coach, received a gift from members of the team. Jacksonville city school Superintendent Ernest Stone was introduced and he in turn introduced several other men who offered their own brief remarks. Coach Newman awarded football letters to Joe Kilgore, Adrian Austin, Jack Taylor, Johnny Tolbert and Elliott Stoffregen. Also this date: The medical records of approximately 26,000 persons who were patients at the former Garner Hospital dating back to the year 1930 are now being microfilmed for files at Anniston Memorial Hospital. When stored as microfilm, each separate sheet of paper can be reduced to the size of approximately one-half inch; 3,000 sheets of paper can fit onto one roll of film.

March 11, 1999, in The Star: Members of the Joint Powers Authority developing Fort McClellan for future use fear that the Army is taking away millions of dollars in equipment that could be useful in the future for new occupants. In other words, does this Army base come furnished or unfurnished? The most current concern centers on two fire trucks and the hazardous material truck in McClellan's fire station. But Army officials also have indicated that they intend to strip bare the Noble Army Health Clinic and the post's elementary school.
