Logan Morrison signs with Yankees after calling their fans 'stupid'

For Logan Morrison, the tables have turned.

The slugger, who once took a jab at New York Yankees fans over a Home Run Derby snub, is now part of the organization after agreeing to a minor league deal on Friday.

In 2017, Morrison, then playing for the Tampa Bay Rays, was vocal about not being invited to the Derby despite having 24 home runs at the time of the selection. The Yankees’ Gary Sánchez, meanwhile, had 13 homers.

“Gary shouldn’t be there,” Morrison told the Tampa Bay Times at the time. “Gary’s a great player, but he shouldn’t be in the Home Run Derby. I remember when I had 14 home runs. That was a month and a half ago."

The following year, as a member of the Minnesota Twins, Morrison commented about being heckled at Yankee Stadium.

“They didn’t like the Gary Sanchez thing with the Home Run Derby,” Morrison said to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, “but you can’t fix stupid, you know?”

Morrison hit .186 with 15 home runs and 39 RBIs in 95 games with the Twins last season and will give the Yankees depth at first base. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, he has an opt-out date of July 1 and will make $1 million if added to the major league roster.

Morrison’s signing elicited strong reactions from fans on Twitter, who no doubt did not enjoy his slight toward the organization two years ago.

For their parts, both Morrison and Sanchez appear to be over the beef.

Morrison told the New York Post that he intended the criticism toward the selection process, not Sanchez.

“So if they’re going to still get on me for it, they can still get on me for it but they’re just wasting their time,” he said. “They could spend their energies doing something else.”

And Sanchez told NorthJersey.com something similar.

"That’s a long time ago," Sanchez said through an interpreter. "We’re way over that stuff. Now he’s a teammate and we’re going to treat him as a teammate and we’re going to welcome here in this clubhouse. There’s no sense of talking something that happened so long ago."
