Locals battle in playoff thrillers

Feb. 23—OKMULGEE — The green and black battled until the final buzzer went off.

No. 3 Quinton faced No. 8 Red Oak in Friday's championship game of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Class A Area IV area playoffs, where the Lady Savages fell to the Lady Eagles in a 39-37 thriller.

Both teams jumped to battle right from the jump. Quinton's Aliviah Daniels put the first two points on the board for the game, after multiple attempts of shots from both teams.

Red Oak's defense responded immediately, but Quinton continued driving into the paint and making three's — leading over the Lady Eagles 17-14 after the first quarter.

Quinton dropped a triple going into the second quarter, with Red Oak responding with one of their own. Fouls started being called for both teams, slowing down the momentum a bit. Red Oak took the opportunity to make their free throws — slowly cutting their deficit to two points by halftime, trailing Quinton 26-24.

Turnovers came into play during the third quarter, as well as missed three point shots from both teams. Both teams kept fighting for their shots, but Quinton continued getting fouls called on them — giving Red Oak more opportunities to put points on the board.

The game came down to the final seconds of the game. Tied 37-37 with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter, Daniels was called for a foul, giving Red Oak the opportunity to drain both free throws, giving the Lady Eagles the win.

Daniels led Quinton with 11 points, followed by Bailey Nester and Alexis Purdom with nine points each, Haddie Lindley with six points, and Lila Gragg with two points.

Next up for Quinton, they will face Ripley tomorrow in the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee at 6 p.m. — with the winner advancing to next week's Class A State Tournament in Oklahoma City.

CLASS B

DOVER 35, PITTSBURG 27

The Lady Panthers never stopped fighting.

Pittsburg faced Dover in Friday's area championship game of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Class B Area II area playoffs, where the Lady Panthers fell to the Lady Longhorns 35-27.

Foul trouble from Dover gave Akiera Hawk opportunities in the first quarter to get points on the board through her free throws, as well as a triple from Aspen Duvall. Two-point shots from Hawk, Colby Burchield, and Mady Heffley in the second quarter kept the Lady Panthers close to Dover heading into the locker room.

Chuck Couch went to work in the third quarter, adding six points and making both of her free throws — but it wasn't enough as Dover gained momentum and added more points to the board, sealing their ticket to the Big House next week.

Hawk led Pittsburg with 11 points, followed by Couch with eight points, Duvall and Heffley with three points each, and Burchfield with two points.

Next up for Pittsburg, they will face Kiowa tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Henryetta — with the winner advancing to next week's Class B State Tournament in Oklahoma City.

KIOWA 48, WHITESBORO 43

The Cowgirls walked out of the locker room after halftime determined to win the game.

Kiowa faced Whitesboro in Friday's consolation second round of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Class B Area II area playoffs, where the Cowgirls defeated the Lady Bulldogs 48-43 to advance to the consolation final.

Kiowa had a slow start against Whitesboro, with the Lady Bulldogs leading 15-12 after the first quarter. In the second, Whitesboro took foul opportunities to add more points on the board through free throws, extending the lead over Kiowa to six at the half.

The Cowgirls responded in the third quarter, with a triple from Paige Igou and points from Maccie Bain and Ella Roberts to grab the lead from the Lady Bulldogs — leading by three after the third quarter.

Kiowa was able to seal the win in the fourth with free throws drawn from fouls, moving one step closer to advancing to the Big House.

Bain led the Cowgirls with 19 points, followed by Igou with 13 points, Ella Roberts with seven points, Emma Roberts with six points, and Alison Wolfenbarger with three points.
