Locals advance to regional tourney finals

Feb. 15—STRINGTOWN — The Lady Panthers went to work to earn the win.

Pittsburg faced off against Whitesboro Thursday in the opening round of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Class B Area II regional playoffs, where the Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Bulldogs 50-29.

Pittsburg immediately came out strong, with Akiera Hawk being the first to put two points on the board. The Lady Panthers followed that up with defensive pressure that kept Whitesboro from earning successful shots.

Whitesboro tried to press back at Pittsburg, but it didn't stand a chance — giving the Lady Panthers a 19-10 run at the end of the first.

The second quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs strike back, using the opportunity to drain some shots to cut the lead. But back-to-back threes from Aspen Duvall kept Pittsburg ahead 25-17 at the end of the half.

The third quarter started off slow again for the Lady Panthers, but they began slowly gaining momentum heading into the fourth quarter. Defense was a key role for Pittsburg, holding off Whitesboro to seal the win.

Hawk led Pittsburg with 17 points, followed by Duvall with 15 points, Chuck Couch with nine points, Mady Heffley with 5 points, Karis Miller with three points, and Tabrey Powell with one point.

Up next for Pittsburg, they will play in the Class B Area II regional championship game against Kiowa on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Stringtown.

QUINTON 56, DEPEW 34

QUINTON — When the dominoes started falling, there was no stopping them.

No. 3 Quinton hosted Depew Thursday in the opening round of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Class A regional tournament, where the home team used an offensive surge on the way to a 56-34 win and advancing to the regional finals.

Haddie Lindley got Quinton started with a bucket on an inbounds play, but Depew answered back with a 12-0 run to jump into the lead. The green and white punched right back, using threes from Lila Gragg and Lindley alongside a Bailey Purdom steal-and-score to cut the deficit down to two points after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Aliviah Daniels struck with back-to-back driving scores, including one that included an extra made free throw to put Quinton back on the high side. That sparked a 10-0 run that also featured five points from Gragg to extend the lead.

Depew looked to slice into the score, but Quinton kept striking with threes from Lindley and Shaylee Black and points from Gragg on the way to a 29-22 lead at the break.

Gragg kept her team moving with momentum out of the locker room, scoring the first five of the half for Quinton. Lindley added a cleanup bucket followed by Black with another swishing three, sending the green-clad fans to their feet.

Quinton paired the offense with stifling defense, shutting down Depew for most of the quarter on the way to a 39-25 lead heading into the final period.

With the momentum firmly shifted in their direction, Quinton rode the wave to the win and advance to the regional final.

Lindley led the way with 21 points, followed by Gragg with 16 points, Black with nine points, Daniels with five points, and Purdom with two points.

Next up, Quinton will face No. 16 Stonewall in the tournament finals Saturday at 6 p.m. The opening-round win also guaranteed the green and white a spot in the area tournament.
