Local Sports: SMCC spreads wealth in season-opening win

Everyone shared in the fun.

All 14 active players on the St. Mary Catholic Central roster scored Monday night as the Falcons opened their boys basketball season with a 76-42 win.

SMCC led 16-8 after one quarter, then really poured it on in the second period by outscoring their guests 28-4. It was 44-12 at the half and 62-18 at the end of three.

Buddy Snodgrass got the Falcons started with 8 of his game-high 15 points in the first period, then Michael Laboe nailed four 3-pointers in the second quarter to account for all 12 of his points.

Trent Zachel added 8 points and John Illes and Patrick Lipford 6 apiece.

The most points SMCC scored in a game last season was 67.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Milan drops two

PETOSKEY − Milan dropped a pair of games this past weekend at the Petoskey Invitational, falling to the host school 66-26 on Friday and Grandville 61-34 Saturday.

Milan fell behind for good in both games after tough second quarters. The Big Reds were held scoreless in the second against Petsokey and had just 2 points in the period against Grandville.

Markeyla McCray led Milan (0-3) with 12 points against Petoskey. Malea Wourman had 15 against Grandville.

Strong start for champs

FLAT ROCK – The defending champions picked up where they left off last season as the Huron League bowling season opened Monday at Flat Rock Lanes.

New Boston Huron’s boys got 200-plus games from Hayden Williams (244), Brad Hughes (235, 222), Tyler Toth (211) and Nick Suemnick (204) to roll over Riverview 22-8.

On the girls side, Airport was dominant in a 29-1 victory over Jefferson. Ryan Giese led the way with games of 196 and 179 for a 375 series. Callie Calvin shot 188 and 164 for Jefferson.

In other boys matches Airport got a 243 and 191 to overcome a 242-246 from Gabe Cadle in a 28-2 win over Jefferson, Isaac Arrendondo led Flat Rock past Dundee 29-1, and Milan blanked St. Mary Catholic Central 30-0 behind big days from Max Jenness (226-208) and Aaron Reutter (209-206).

Liberty Ostrander led Dundee to a 28-2 win over Flat Rock, Rachel Peladeau shot 201 for Milan in a 27-3 triumph over SMCC, and Veronica Richardson was the top shooter as Huron dispatched Riverview 29-1.

JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL

Airport drops opener

TECUMSEH – Lance Choike and Aidyn Stahr scored 10 points each, but Airport fell 39-30 to Tecumseh in its season opener Monday.

Tecumseh also won the freshman game 53-22. Ryan Burgor scored 6 points to lead Airport.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Miller delivers win

TEMPERANCE – Corbin Miller made a free throw with no time left on the clock to give Bedford’s eighth-grade team an 18-17 win over Chelsea Monday.

Evan Gartee made two 3-pointers and hit 6-of-7 free throws for Bedford.

The seventh graders improved to 9-1 with a 25-18 victory.

ADULT SOCCER

Bello scores four

Habeeb Bello scored four goals and Gerardo Melgarejo added two goals to lead Athletico to a 7-3 win over La-Z-Ballers in the Monroe Indoor Coed Soccer League Sunday at LevelUp Training Center.
