ROMULUS – New Boston Huron was one of the first softball teams in the state to earn a trip to next week’s Regional tournaments.

Most teams didn’t even get to begin the state tournament until Saturday.

But Huron was on the field for a District Friday night.

The Chiefs were not on the field very long.

They got a bye into the finals when the host team folded its team. Huron took home the trophy with an 11-0 five-inning, mercy-rule victory over Dearborn Heights Annapolis.

“It was one those things where you just get it done and move on,” Huron coach Tedi Belisle said.

Annapolis had no luck against Huron pitcher Rylie Greggo. She allowed just one hit and did not walk a batter while striking out 12.

Jenna Kuzara and Marissa Jackson rang up three hits each to lead the offense while Emma Sic went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Annapolis committed 11 errors.

Huron (21-7) advances to the Regional at Trenton.

PREP GOLF

VanHuysen makes state

JACKSON – Summerfield took just three golfers to the Division 4 Regional at Ella Sharp Park Friday, so it had no shot at making it to state as a team.

But one of its golfers is going.

Eli VanHuysen tied for medalist honors with a round of 75, punching his ticket to the finals June 9-10 at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek.

Harris Morlock shot 99 and Avery Redlinger 103 for the Bulldogs.

Hillsdale Academy won the Regional with 318 and Lenawee Christian (343) and Hudson (344) also qualified for state.

PRO BASEBALL

Wiemer goes deep

CINCINNATI – Bedford graduate Joey Wiemer blasted his sixth home run of the season to help the Milwaukee Brewers earn a 5-4 win over Cincinnati Friday night.

Wiemer went 1-for-3 with two RBI and two walks. He is hitting .201 with 16 RBI and nine stolen bases.

Allen Park Cabrini won the championship of the Division 4 District hosted by St. Mary Catholic Central with a 4-0 win over Lutheran Westland in the finals Friday.
