LOCAL ROUNDUP: Westville ruins Danville's home opener

Mar. 14—DANVILLE — The Westville baseball team continued their strong start to the season on Wednesday with a 10-1 win over Danville.

Cade Schaumburg, Matt Darling and Ben Johnson combined for a no-hitter with nine strikeouts on the mound for the Tigers. Easton Barney had three hits and three RBIs on offense, while Johnson had two hits and tow RBIs, Zach Russell had two hits and a RBI and Schaumburg had one RBI.

Grady Devors had six strikeouts in four innings for Danville, while Cameron Feuerborn scored the lone run.

Westville was coming off a 12-0 win over Tuscola to start the season on Tuesday.

Zach Russell had two hits with five RBIs, while Cameron Steinbaugh had two hits and two RBIs, and Drew Wichtowski, Darling, Johnson and Alec Davis each had one RBI. Steinbaugh had seven strikeouts on the mound in four innings and Barney had one strikeout in one inning.

The Vikings will travel to Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin, while the Tigers will host Villa Grove today.

PAXTON — The Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin baseball team had 18 hits to start the season with a 13-3 win over Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Tuesday.

Jordan Johnson had three hits and three RBIs for the Blue Devils, while Cruz Dubois had four hits and two RBIs, Chaz Dubois had two hits and two RBIs, Anderson Thomas and Dane Dillion each had two RBIs, Caden Kelemenic had three hits and Enrique Rangel had two hits.

Kelemenic had eight strikeouts in three innings to get the win, while Thomas had three strikeouts in an inning and Dillon had two strikeouts in three innings.

OAKWOOD — The Oakwood baseball team had the early lead, but Villa Grove rallied in the later innings to get a 7-6 win on Tuesday.

Cort Vermillion had two hits and two RBIs for the Comets, while Chase Harrison had three hits and eight strikeouts on the mound, Derek Drews had two hits and Chase Dudley, Brody Taflinger and Alex Wallace each had one RBI.

The Comets will face Casey-Westfield today.

At Oakwood

CATLIN — The Salt Fork baseball team wanted to go 2-0 to start the season on Tuesday, but Arcola had different plans in getting a 5-1 win.

Jameson Remole had 10 strikeouts in four innings for the Storm, who will play Tri-Valley on Saturday.

St. Thomas More 7, Hoopeston Area 6

CHAMPAIGN — After getting a 2-0 win over St. Anne/Donovan on Monday to start the season, the Hoopeston Area baseball team looked for another win on Tuesday.

But the Cornjerkers lost to St. Thomas More 7-6. Ryker Small had two doubles and a RBI at the plate and seven strikeouts on the mound, while Cole Miller had two hits with a double and Zach Huchel had six strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

On Monday, Small had two hits and a RBI, Wyatt Eisenmann had a double and a RBI and Dylan Judy had 15 strikeouts to get the win.

The Cornjerkers will host Tri-Valley today.


Danville 7, Westville 6

WESTVILLE — The Danville softball team made the most of their first game under new head coach Megan Smith on Wednesday.

The Vikings jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning and was able to hang on to a 7-6 win over Westville.

Jaidyn Hardesty had two hits and two RBIs to lead Danville, while Gracie Briggs had two RBIs, Olivia Scaggs had two hits and one RBI, Kendall Rannebarger and Payton Beith each had one BRI and Ka'Leah Bellik and Alicia Angus each had two hits. Rannebarger had two strikeouts on the mound to get the win.

Daylin Zaayer had a two hits with a solo home run for the Tigers, while Abby Sablaskey, Peyton Sabalaskey and Layla Atwood each had one RBI.

The Tigers were coming off a 2-0 win over Tuscola on Tuesday. Abby Sabalaskey pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Tuscola.

Lilly Kiesel had the lone RBI for the Tigers with two singles, while Abby Sabalaskey had a triple and a double.

The Vikings will play Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin on Friday, while Westville will play Mahomet-Seymour on Friday.

ST. JOSEPH — The Salt Fork softball team took an early lead, but could not hold on in a 6-3 loss to St. Joseph-Ogden on Tuesday.

Alexa Jamison had three hits and a RBI for the Storm while Hadley Pierce and Sailor Pacot each had one RBI.

Karlie McGee had a strikeout and two walks on the mound for Salt Fork, who will play Blue Ridge on Friday.

Local Players make Academic All-State

Three local players were able to make the Indiana Academic All-State team.

On the boys team., Fountain Central's Owen Acton and Covington's Brian Karrfalt were named to the honorable mention team, while Covington's Emma Holycross was named to the girls honorable mention team.


Gayler named to All-Star Game

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Fountain Central's Issac Gayler will be representing Region 4 in the IFCA North/South All-Star game on July 12 at North Decatur High School.

Gayler had 41 catches for 829 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Mustangs this past season.
