LOCAL ROUNDUP: Westchester, Wesleyan advance in NCISAA playoffs
Oct. 23—HIGH POINT — Top-seeded Wesleyan Christian shut out North Raleigh Christian 5-0 on Saturday at Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the NCISAA 4A boys soccer playoffs.
Taj Johnson had three goals and one assist for the Trojans (23-0-1). Sean Jacobs and Nata Souza each had a goal and an assist while Seth Wall had an assist. Jaden DiFoggio and Grey Lunnen split time in goal.
Wesleyan, ranked No. 10 nationally, will host fifth-seeded Charlotte Country Day in the semifinals tonight at 6.
WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY, WAYNE COUNTRY DAY
HIGH POINT — Fifth-seeded Westchester Country Day downed Wayne Country Day 3-0 on Saturday at Westchester in the third round of the NCISAA 2A boys soccer playoffs.
Ben Van Dessel, Will Rives and Coleman Schwartz each scored for the Wildcats (9-9). Schwartz also had an assist. Nolan Patterson (four saves) and Preston Kendrick combined for the win in goal.
Westchester will visit fourth-seeded Gaston Day in the quarterfinals today at 4 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, DURHAM ACADEMY
HIGH POINT — Fourth-seeded Wesleyan Christian edged fifth-seeded Durham Academy 25-7, 23-25, 25-16, 19-25, 16-14 on Saturday at Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the NCISAA 4A volleyball playoffs.
Nejari Crooks had 20 kills, 20 assists, 12 digs, three aces and two blocks for the Trojans. Caroline Lennon added 14 kills while Karli Totel had 13 kills, 27 digs, five aces and two. Davis Bryant and Ryleigh Lennon each had two blocks, and Reece Neal had 26 digs. Zoe McCorquodale had 30 assists.
Wesleyan (14-3) will visit top-seeded Cannon tonight in the semifinals.
HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, GRACE OF RALEIGH
RALEIGH — Eighth-seeded High Point Christian lost 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 against top-seeded Grace Christian of Raleigh on Saturday at Grace in the quarterfinals of the NCISAA 3A volleyball playoffs.
Cameron Martin had nine kills, nine digs and three aces for the Cougars (19-11). Sophie Braetzkus added eight kills, nine digs and two blocks, while Catie McDonald and Hannah Forester each had two blocks. Lauren Boyles had 21 digs, while Kinslee Britton had 12 digs, 15 assists and two blocks.
BISHOP McGUINNESS, MURPHY
KERNERSVILLE — Thirteenth-seeded Bishop McGuinness topped 20th-seeded Murphy 25-16, 25-18, 17-25, 25-19 on Saturday at Bishop in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A West volleyball playoffs.
Karstin Workman had 13 kills, six blocks and three aces to lead the Villains (20-9), who will visit No. 4 Cherokee in the second round today. Susanna Drake had 28 assists, four aces and three blocks, while Rosie Petrovitch had 11 digs.
TRINITY, FORBUSH
TRINITY — Sixteenth-seeded Trinity downed 17th-seeded Forbush 17-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 on Saturday at Trinity in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A West volleyball playoffs.
Sarabeth Johnson had 24 kills and 18 digs for the Bulldogs. Karrington Batten added 16 kills, 10 digs and six blocks while Kaitlyn McCoy had 14 kills and 16 digs. Avalynn Johnson had 54 assists, 19 digs and three aces and Faith Powell had 25 digs.
Trinity (17-8) will visit top-seeded East Surry in the second round today
LEDFORD, LAKE NORMAN
MOORESVILLE — Twenty-seventh seeded Ledford fell 25-18, 25-14, 25-10 against sixth-seeded Lake Norman on Saturday at Lake Norman in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3A West volleyball playoffs.
The Panthers finished their season with a 12-13 record.
OAK GROVE, SOUTHERN GUILFORD
MIDWAY — Second-seeded Oak Grove swept 31st-seeded Southern Guilford 25-11, 25-14, 25-13 on Saturday at Oak Grove in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A West volleyball playoffs.
Sydnee High had nine kills and four blocks for the Grizzlies. Emma Sechrist and Ciara Major each followed with eight kills. Major and Olivia Dixon each had two aces, while Kadence Arnold had four blocks. Savannah Tiller chipped in 10 digs followed by Dixon with six and Major with five. Tatum Tesh had 15 assists.
Oak Grove (21-4) will host 15th-seeded Crest in the second round today.
SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, GRIMSLEY
GREENSBORO — Twenty-second seeded Southwest Guilford lost 25-8, 25-10, 25-11 against 11th-seeded Grimsley on Saturday at Grimsley in the opening round of the NCHSAA 4A West volleyball playoffs.
The Cowgirls finished their season with a 13-11 overall record.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, WINSTON-SALEM PREP
KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness crushed Winston-Salem Prep 45-0 in Catawba Shores 1A/2A Conference football Friday at Bishop.
The Villains (5-4 overall, 4-2 conference), in third place overall behind 2A members Community School of Davidson and Pine Lake Prep, clinched the conference's top seed for the 1A playoffs.
HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, HICKORY GROVE
CHARLOTTE — High Point Christian rolled past Hickory Grove 23-13 in conference football Friday at Hickory Grove Christian.
Tyler Eley completed 6 of 9 passes for 156 yards with a touchdown for the Cougars (8-1 overall, 3-1 conference), who rallied after trailing 13-7 at halftime. Danarius Gibson caught two passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, plus ran 15 times for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Toot Clay added two catches for 37 yards and four rushes for 23 yards. Josh Smith had nine tackles and two sacks on defense, while Mack Johnson had seven tackles and a fumble recovery and Rhyne Russell had eight tackles.
HIGH POINT CENTRAL, ATKINS
WINSTON-SALEM — High Point Central fell 14-0 against Atkins in Mid-State 3A Conference football Friday at Atkins.
Kemari Johnson ran 15 times for 83 yards for the Bison (0-9 overall, 0-6 conference). Davon Clark added one pass for 40 yards and four rushes for 22 yards. DJ Shaw, who caught the 40-yard pass, had 10 tackles and an interception to lead the defense.
