Local roundup: UNCP volleyball falls in five sets at Chowan
Oct. 26—MURFREESBORO — The UNC Pembroke volleyball team registered 67 kills but committed 31 attack errors and fell 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 10-15) to Chowan in a five set thriller on Wednesday evening at Bob Burke Court.
The setback for the Braves (13-13, 7-5 CC) marked the first loss in the 14-match history to Chowan and fall to 5-7 when playing away from Pembroke. The Hawks (5-19, 4-10 CC) snapped a four-game losing skid and marked their second five set victory of the season.
Chowan used a 5-0 scoring run in the first set to take a 13-8 lead following a kill from Ellie Middleton. UNC Pembroke tied the score at 17 apiece after a service ace from Katie Pressley, but the Hawks hit .135 from the net while the Braves hit .083 from the net and the hosts stayed in control of the opening set, winning 25-23.
In the second set, UNCP pushed their lead out to 12-8 off of an Emma Fraidenburg kill. Chowan trimmed its deficit back to 20-19 with a kill from Haydon Ahlers, but the Braves hit a match-best .486 from the net and scored four of the final four points of the set, winning 25-20 to even the match .
Chowan got a quick start and used a kill from Ellie Middleton to lead 12-7 in the third set. UNC Pembroke struggled offensively hitting just .095 from the net, but chipped away at its deficit, 19-14, following a CU attack error. The Braves fended off a match point with a kill from Ruby Countryman, but Chowan's Ryan Nored ended the set with a kill to win 25-19.
An early 5-0 scoring surge in the fourth set capped off with a kill from Ruby Countryman gave UNCP a 7-2 advantage. The Braves pushed their score out to 17-9 after blocks from Emma Fraidenburg and Katelyn West and sent it to a deciding set, winning 25-17 after limiting Chowan to a .053 hitting percentage during the frame.
In the decisive fifth set, Chowan scored five of the first six points and picked up a 7-3 lead after a UNCP error. Abby Peduzzi's kill cut the Braves deficit back to 10-9, but the Hawks closed out the match on a 5-1 run to clinch the match with a 15-10 win.
Countryman had 19 kills and two blocks for UNCP, Peduzzi had 15 kills and 15 digs, Fraidenburg had 13 kills and two blocks, Pressley had 56 assists and two aces, Hope Turbyfill had 22 digs, Tyler Patterson had 15 digs and Katelynn Swain had two blocks.
The Braves will be back in action on Friday when they welcome Lees-McRae to Pembroke for the start of Alumni Weekend. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Schwengle named CC Swimmer of the Week
A stellar performance during Saturday's tri-meet paid dividends for Britta Schwengle who has been named as the Conference Carolinas Swimmer of the Week, league officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
Schwengle picked up three individual titles on Saturday during the UNCP-Tri meet and swam the anchor leg of the 400-yard Freestyle relay team that placed third. A native of Savaneta, Aruba, Schwengle also set the Sue Walsh Swimming Pool facility record in the 200-yard Freestyle and the 1000-yard Freestyle.
Schwengle holds the sixth fastest time in the nation for the 500-yard Freestyle.
