Local roundup: Sinclair leads Red Devils to win in baseball opener

Feb. 28—RED SPRINGS — Red Springs pitcher Xzavier Sinclair made a splash in his varsity baseball debut Tuesday, as the freshman pitcher threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over West Columbus in the Red Devils' season opener.

Sinclair struck out 10 Vikings hitters in the win.

T.J. Ellerbe had two hits, two steals and a run scored for Red Springs (1-0). Jayden Hammonds had an RBI sacrifice fly for the game's only run.

Red Springs hosts Douglas Byrd in nonconference play Wednesday before the Red Devils and Vikings (0-1) meet again on Friday in Cerro Gordo.

Purnell Swett dominates in softball opener

The Purnell Swett softball team struck early and often Tuesday in a season-opening win over visiting Pinecrest, winning 11-1 in five innings.

Purnell Swett (1-0) scored four runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third and two in the fifth. Pinecrest (0-1) scored one run in the fourth.

Chloe Chavis and Jayla Graham each had two hits and two runs for Purnell Swett, with Graham recording three RBIs and Chavis adding one. Braci Woods also had two hits. Lanna Haggans and Tomya Hunt had one hit and one RBI each, with two RBIs by Hunt and one by Haggans. Piper Miller scored two runs and Sonata Oxendine had one.

Woods earned her first career win in the circle, allowing one run on one hit with seven strikeouts in five innings for the Rams.

The Rams host Triton in nonconfernece play on Wednesday.

Rams top Laney on the diamond

The Purnell Swett based ball team earned an 11-6 home nonconference win over Laney to start the season Tuesday.

Purnell Swett (1-0) scored four runs in the third inning and two in the fourth; Laney (0-1) scored one in the third and five in the fifth. With the game tied at 6-6, the Rams struck for five sixth-inning runs that made the difference.

Mason Brewer had three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Rams and Joseden Oxendine had three hits, three RBIs and a run. Jacob Chavis and Camden Hunt each had two hits and two RBIs, with Chavis scoring twice and Hunt once. Bladdon Hammonds had two hits and a run and Jacey Jacobs had two hits and one RBI. Chandon Sanderson, Waydan McMillan and Easton Oxendine all had one hit, with a run and an RBI for Oxendine and two runs for Sanderson.

Owen Gore had three hits with a run and an RBI and Jack Holliman and Jason Sproull each had two hits for the Buccaneers; Hampton Roderick scored two runs and Ayden Rogers had two RBIs.

Jaythan Locklear pitched four innings for Purnell Swett, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Chandon Sanderson earned the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings with three hits allowed and four strikeouts.

The Rams host Scotland for a nonconference matchup Thursday in Pembroke.

Purnell Swett girls soccer starts with a win

The Purnell Swett girls soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Hoke County on Tuesday in Pembroke.

Sarah Hunt had an unassisted goal for the Rams (1-0) before Kyndallon Oxendine scored a goal assisted by Josie McLean.

The Rams host Scotland Friday before a rematch with Hoke County next Tuesday in Raeford.

Pirates drop softball opener

The Lumberton softball team took an 11-2 loss Tuesday in the first game of the season against visiting Hoggard.

Hoggard (1-0) scored one run in the first inning, three in the second, two each in the third and fourth and three in the sixth. Lumberton (0-1) kept the game alive with a two-run sixth inning. The Pirates committed four errors in the game.

Aniya Merritt, Alyssa Stone, Tiara Stueck and Alona Hanna each had hits for Lumberton, with a double by Stone and a two-run home run by Hanna to account for the Pirates' runs.

Gracie Mabrey had four hits including a double and a home run with three RBIs for the Vikings. Logan Ulrich had three hits and two RBIs.

Halona Sampson was the losing pitcher, allowing six earned runs and striking out 11 in seven innings. Macey Ciamillo earned the win, allowing two earned runs in seven innings with eight strikeouts.

Lumberton hosts Whiteville on Wednesday; Hoggard returns to Robeson County to face Purnell Swett Friday in Pembroke.

Red Springs softball falls to West Columbus

The Red Springs softball team dropped a 20-14 decision in its season-opening game Tuesday at home against West Columbus.

Telenda Pate had four hits and four RBIs for the Red Devils and struck out four batters in the circle.

The win by West Columbus ended a 54-game losing streak dating back to 2019.

The two teams meet again Friday in Cerro Gordo.
