Local roundup: Montville's Hillman, Wheeler's Hauptmann post triple-doubles

Jan. 25—THOMPSON — A rare triple-double by Montville's Maya Hillman led the Indians to a 43-23 girls' basketball victory over Tourtellotte on Monday afternoon.

Hillman, a senior, finished with 10 points, 16 rebounds and 10 steals for Montville (7-7), while freshman Jada Cheung had 14 points and Grace Sanford scored 13.

In other games:

— Addie Hauptmann also had a triple-double to highlight Wheeler's 57-9 win over Grasso Tech. Hauptmann finished with 22 points, 16 rebounds and 10 steals for the Lions (4-8) while Maddie Perkins added 11 rebounds. Sam Post scored seven points for Grasso Tech (0-7).

— Izzy Pazzaglia scored 21 of her game-high 27 points in the first half of East Lyme's 53-50 win over Ledyard. Dani Bruno, Neva Flickinger and Ava Roach each scored six for East Lyme (4-8). Kiki Kirvan had 17 points for the Colonels (6-4) and Cierra Bravar scored seven.

— Plainfield held Griswold to just seven points in the first half and cruised to a 38-19 victory over the Wolverines in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III game. Lindsey VanLanen led Griswold (5-6, 2-3) with seven points. The Wolverines were outrebounded 38-28.

H.S. boys' basketball

— Loudon Chupas had 25 points as Hale-Ray beat Grasso Tech, 67-43. Mamush Ciccarello had 12 points and Miles Gagne scored 11 for Hale-Ray. Charis Johnson and Randy Vidal both scored 10 for the Eagles (0-7).

— Bancroft overcame a 24-19 halftime deficit to defeat Williams School 56-41. Demitris Martin led the Blues (1-5) with 21 points.

H.S. gymnastics

— Lydia Laskey won the vault and Mary Lord the balance beam as Stonington defeated East Lyme/Old Lyme/Old Saybrook 127.7-109.9. Laskey scored 8.4 points on the vault and Lord 8.6 on the beam. East Lyme's Kaityn Abbey captured the uneven bars (9.3) and floor exercise (9.3) while winning the all-around competition with 35.2 points. Laskey was second (33.8) and third (33.25) for the Bears 4-2. East Lyme/Old Lyme/Old Saybrook is 0-4.

H.S. hockey

— Dakota Fox, Dylan Relaz and Wyatt Verbridge all scored for the Eastern Connecticut Eagles as they tied Guilford, 3-3. Gavin Casagrande and Cam Gouveia each had an assist for the Eagles (4-6-1) and Cam McCollum had 29 saves.

Men's basketball

— Tyler Perez had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Garrett Drummond also added 18 points to go seven assists as Coast Guard used a late 13-2 run to beat Wheaton 83-78 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The Bears (4-11, 1-5) snapped a five-game losing streak. Ben Yagey added 16 points forCoast Guard while Bryce VanderWiere came off the bench to score a career-high 11.

— Cam Schainfeld had 18 points and four rebounds to lead Connecticut College past Albertus Magnus, 67-55. Jarron Flynn had 16 points and five rebounds for Conn College (8-6) and Ben Rice had nine points and nine rebounds. Kevin Crawford scored 20 for the Falcons (8-4).

College honors

— Mitchell College swept the weekly New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball honors. Waterford's Mikey Buscetto, a junior guard, was named Player of the Week while Robert Zirlis, a freshman forward, was named Rookie of the Week.

Buscetto, honored for the third time this season, averaged 24.0 points and shot 47 percent from the floor in a pair of wins, including a career-high 32 points in a win over New England College. Zirlis averaged 7.0 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting at 70 percent from the floor.

— Mitchell also swept the weekly NECC awards in women's basketball. Amina Wiley, a senior forward, was named Player of the Week and Tianna Sweeney, a sophomore forward, was named Rookie of the Week.

Wiley was honored for third time this season after shooting 59 percent from the floor, averaging 18.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in a pair of games, and becoming the Mariners' career leader in rebounds. Sweeney averaged 8.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, including 10 rebounds and three blocks off the bench in a game against Coast Guard.

— Conn College junior guard Molly Cronin was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball. Cronin scored 15 points, including the game-winning basket, in Conn's 53-51 win over Trinity while contributing three steals and two assists as the Camels ended Trinity's four-game winning streak.

— Conn College sophomore goalie Sean Dynan was named NESCAC Player of the Week in men's hockey. Dynan led the Camels to a 3-0 week, allowing just one goal in each game in wins over Hamilton (2-1), Trinity (3-1) and Wesleyan (2-1). Dynan made 102 saves, including 42 vs. Hamilton, while finishing with a .971 save percentage.

— Conn College junior forward Camille Phelan was named NESCAC Player of the Week in women's hockey. Phelan helped the Camels sweep a home-and-home series against Wesleyan (2-1 and 4-3 in OT), factoring in all four goals of the overtime win, including the game-tying goal with 10 seconds left in regulation and the game-winner in OT.
