Local roundup: Mitchell baseball sweeps way into first place in NECC

Apr. 29—HENNIKER, N.H. — A pair of grand slams helped propel Mitchell College to a doubleheader sweep of New England College on Wednesday, moving the Mariners into first place in the New England Collegiate Conference baseball standings.

In a 5-1 win in game one, junior Dougie DelaCruz of Montville belted a grand slam to highlight a five-run fifth inning and Roland Thivierge (5-0) pitched a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out 11 and walking two. Senior Jeremy Sagun of Montville had a single and RBI.

In game two, Mitchell (17-6, 10-2) rallied from a 9-3 deficit to post a 15-11 victory. Senior Anthony Diaz's game slam in a five-run fourth inning handed the Mariners the lead for good at 12-9. Diaz also hit a two-run homer and two-run single to finish with three hits and eight RBI.

Hunter Yaworski had a two-run home run, DelaCruz added three hits and Jakari Pellegrini had a solo home run. Reliever Camren Varney pitched the final three innings to earn the save, allowing one run.

NEC is 11-13, 9-3.

H.S. baseball

— Winning pitcher Colton Vasseur went the distance, tossing a four-hitter and striking out 11, and had two hits and three RBI to power Bacon Academy past East Lyme, 6-2, in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I game. Harry Snow had a double and RBI and Luke Pennella added a single and RBI for the Bobcats (4-2, 4-2). The Vikings (3-4, 3-4) led 2-0 after two batters thanks to Gavin O'Brien's two-run home run. O'Brien finished with two hits.

— Riley Warecke had two of Old Lyme's six hits in a 3-0 loss to Valley Regional in the Shoreline Conference. Alex Roth, Casey Hurtgen, Jasper Silberberg and Jaden Reyes each had a single for the Wildcats (3-6, 3-6).

— Tito Arias, Jose Hernandez and Reynaldo Hidalgo each had a single in Grasso Tech's 10-0, five-inning non-conference loss to Woodstock Academy.

H.S. softball

— Cayla Beverly pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Stonington defeated Bacon Academy 17-0 in an ECC Division I game. Maggie Constantine went 3-for-5 with five RBI for the Bears (1-1, 1-1), while Tori LoPresto had a single, two doubles and four RBI and Phoebe Werling had two hits and two RBI. Bacon is 3-5, 3-5.

— Montville won its fourth straight game, beating East Lyme, 8-5, in ECC Division I play. Maggie Wainwright went 2-for-3 with four RBI, Christyna Winstead had two triples and Brooke Tayler added two hits and scored two runs for the Indians (4-2, 4-2). Winning pitcher Lillie Corrice had a career-best 12 strikeouts. Arleen McKiernan had a double and triple for the Vikings (0-6, 0-6).

— Morgan Cook had two hits, including a home run, to lift Norwich Tech past Parish Hill, 11-10. Winning pitcher Catie Flynn scored three runs and stole two bases while Emili Fiasconaro and Megan Dittrich each had two hits and two RBI, and Gabby Fedus added two RBI for the Warriors (4-1).

College softball

— Mitchell dropped an NECC doubleheader to New England College, losing 5-1 and 9-0. In the first game, Jossette Madison had a solo home run and Nene Capeles and Laurissa Amaker each had a single to account for the team's three hits. Capeles and Maliah Pabellon had the only hits in game two that went five innings for the Mariners (7-16, 5-11).

H.S. boys' tennis

— Fitch's Ian Straub rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7) win at No. 1 singles as Fitch edged Ledyard 4-3 in an ECC Division I match. The Falcons (4-1, 3-1) also swept the doubles with wins by Aidan McLean-Tim Lynch, Ryan Mignosa-Michael McBride and Charlie Cartier-Calvin Lupo. The Colonels (2-2, 2-2) picked up singles wins from Matt Bourguignon, Ronan Allison and Ben Fieldsend.

— Tucker Callahan, Matthew Turrisi, Jackson Conlon and Chase Williams won their singles matches in straight sets in Stonington's 7-0 shutout of Killingly. The Bears improved to 4-0 overall. The doubles duos of Conrad Tobiassen-Joshua Lord and Owen Grant-Peter Previty also were victorious.

— Old Lyme rolled past Coginchaug 7-0 in Shoreline Conference play, receiving singles wins from George Danes, Charles Hinckley, Griffin McGlinchey and Pat Dagher who all didn't lose a set. The Wildcats are 7-1, 7-1.

H.S. girls' tennis

— Maddie Hamm, Maddie Gonsalvez and Mia Lewandowski all won their singles matches without losing a game to lift Stonington past Killingly, 7-0. Lauren Buckley also earned a win in singles in straight sets for the Bears (3-1).

— The No. 3 doubles team of Ariana Timmerman-Claire Fenaughty won their match to help Fitch clinch a 4-3 ECC Division I win over Ledyard. Julia Meiguj and Fiona Kennedy posted singles wins for the Falcons (4-1, 3-1). Sarah Bailey and Bianca Planeta won in singles for the Colonels (2-4, 1-4).

— Old Lyme improved to 8-0 overall and in the Shoreline Conference with a 6-1 win over Coginchaug. Callie Bass, Sam Tan and Livie Bass won their singles matches in straight sets.

— Norwich Tech dropped a tight match with Abbott Tech, losing 4-3. Lily Armstrong won at No. 3 singles for the Warriors (1-1), who received doubles wins from Amber Kerby-Alyssa Mikolajczak and Kara Espinosa-Ildanita Campo.

H.S. golf

— Matt Orefice fired a 37 to earn medalist honors, leading East Lyme past Waterford, 6-1, in a Division I match at Great Neck Country Club. Logan Rolfe (40), Max Caron (47) and Graham Mundell (47) also posted wins for the Vikings (4-0, 4-0). Waterford's Nick Hynes won at No. 1, shooting a 39. The Lancers are 4-2, 4-1.

— Grant Kortfelt earned medalist honors with a 44 and Montville teammate Morgun Whittaker shot a 45 in a win over Plainfield. All five golfers fired in the 40s for the Indians (3-0), who won the team medal point, 182-258.

— Medalist Matt Ladd fired a 40 for Griswold, which lost to Woodstock, 5-2, in an ECC Division II match. Lucas Hanley also won his match for the Wolverines (3-2, 2-2), shooting a 47.

— New London's Zach Stock was the medalist with a 43 but Wheeler/Ledyard won the ECC Division I match, 6-1. Gavin Arruda won his match with a 47 and Cam Conway shot a 50 for the Lions (1-3, 1-2), who took the team medal points, 196-241. The Whalers are 0-6, 0-5.

— Pat Flanagan shot a 44 for the low score for Old Lyme, which lost to North Branford, 191-198, in a non-league match. Gavin Porter had a 49 for the Wildcats (3-2).

College golf

— Michael McCarthy became just the third Mitchell golfer to earn all-conference first team honors, as he was named to the All-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference squad after competing in the conference championship at Ranch Golf Club in Southwick, Mass. The Mariners finished fourth in the team competition, with McCarthy tying for third place at four-over 76 and Nick Knisel tying for 12th at 81. Westfield State won the team title with 309, led by individual champion Matteo Godek (73).

H.S. girls' lacrosse

— Grace Armstrong had eight goals and two assists in Wheeler's 15-14 win over New London in ECC Division II action. Leah Pion had four goals, including the game-winner, and an assist while Katelyn Melinosky chipped in three goals and an assist and goalie Peach Schroeder made seven saves for the Lions (2-3, 2-3). The Whalers are 1-4, 1-4.

H.S. boys' lacrosse

— Robbie Darling scored four goals and added two assists to spark Williams School to an 11-6 win over Rocky Hill (R.I.). Cody Delaurentis had three goals while Max Sarwar had a goal and two assists and goalies Jack Yost (16 saves) and Colby Potts (six) also played well.

— Sawyer Tighe scored four goals as Montville defeated Ledyard/Griswold 9-3 in an ECC Division II game on Tuesday night. Conor Gaughan added three goals for the Indians (2-3, 2-2) while Antonio Brown scored twice and goalie Steven Turchetta made 17 saves. Cameron Reynolds scored twice for the Colonels (0-4, 0-3) while Joseph Burton added a goal and goalie Seth Hurt made 25 saves.
