Local roundup: Bishop girls defeat N. Raleigh Christian

Jan. 8—RALEIGH — Bishop McGuinness topped North Raleigh Christian 64-49 during Saturday's girls basketball showcase at Word of God.

Claire Sullivan scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Villains (11-1), who led 29-19 at halftime. Kiersten Varner added 17 points and was selected the game's MVP, while Emma Wagoner added 16 points.

Bishop, which closed the fourth quarter making 19 of 21 free throws, will next play Thursday against Grace Christian of Sanford — the top-ranked team in the state — featuring national standout Sarah Strong.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, GREENSBORO DAY

GREENSBORO — Wesleyan Christian beat Greensboro Day 54-50 in PTAC boys basketball Friday at Greensboro Day.

Zacch Wiggins scored 17 points to lead the Trojans (12-5 overall, 2-2 PTAC) in coach Victor Young's return to Greensboro Day. Luke Morgan followed with 12 points while Jasean Williams chipped in 11 points.

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY

LEWISVILLE — High Point Christian edged Forsyth Country Day 58-56 in PTAC boys basketball Friday at Forsyth Country Day. The Cougars improved to 16-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

In the girls game, HPCA rolled to a 60-28 victory to move to 15-1 and 4-0. Kylie Torrence had 16 points, followed by Ale'na Lewis with 12 and Courtney Taylor with 11.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford defeated Southeast Guilford 79-53 in Metro 4A Conference boys basketball Friday at Southwest. The Cowboys improved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

In the girls game, Southwest won 50-40 to improve to 9-2 and 3-0.

OAK GROVE, ASHEBORO

MIDWAY — Oak Grove cruised past Asheboro 80-13 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference play Friday at Oak Grove.

Trista Charles had 20 points for the Grizzlies (12-2 overall, 1-0 conference). Kalin Favreau added 16 points while Victoria Lockamy had 13 points.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD, ATKINS

GUILFORD COUNTY — Southern Guilford defeated Atkins 68-22 in Mid-State 3A Conference boys basketball Friday at Southern. The Storm improved to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

In the girls game, Southern won 43-39 to improve to 3-9 and 1-2.

THOMASVILLE, SOUTH DAVIDSON

DENTON — Thomasville beat South Davidson 69-27 in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference boys basketball Friday at South Davidson. The Bulldogs improved to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the CCC.

WHEATMORE, EASTERN RANDOLPH

RAMSEUR — Wheatmore topped Eastern Randolph 46-32 in PAC 1A/2A girls basketball Friday at Eastern Randolph. The Warriors improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

AT JUST DON'T LOSE HS CLASSIC

WINSTON-SALEM — Area runners combined for four top-three finishes to highlight Saturday's Just Don't Lose HS Classic at JDL Fast Track.

Southwest Guilford's Jamel Brown won the boys 500 meter run in 1:05.41 while teammate Christien Stamp was second in the boys 3200 in 9:37.92.

Ragsdale's Harrison Howard was third in the boys 1000 in 2:37.56 and Jones Barber, from Wesleyan Christian but running unattached in this event, was also third in the boys 1600 in 4:35.30.

WRESTLING

AT PARKWOOD DUALS

MONROE — Trinity swept its five matches — winning 82-0 against Chesterfield (S.C.), 76-6 against Hunter Huss, 60-12 against Jack Britt, 51-19 against Weddington, and 80-0 against West Stanly — during Saturday's Parkwood Duals.

Spencer May (120 pounds), Brayden Hall (126), Levi Dennis (132), Charles "Bear" Schaefer (144) and Baron Justice (150) won five matches for the Bulldogs. AIden Burkholder (106), Jaden Allred (138), Zane Schloemer (157), Lawson Coltrane (175) and Gavin Hardister (215) won four matches.

GREENSBORO — Bruce Dudley took second place at 175 pounds to highlight Southern Guilford's performance in the Crosby Invitational on Saturday at Dudley.

Southwest Guilford's Syed Ibraheem took third at 132 pounds, while Dawson Clark was third at 285 pounds. Jackson Fulcher took fourth at 157 pounds.
