LOCAL ROUNDUP: Area athletes earn all-state honors

May 23—HIGH POINT — Nearly two dozen area athletes playing spring sports earned NCISAA all-state honors, which the association released this week.

The honorees were: In baseball, High Point Christian's Eli Crump, Noah Hill and Sam Sapp in the 3A division; Wesleyan Christian's Jacob Cozart and Grant Aycock in the 4A.

In golf, Westchester Country Day's Jaxson Morgan in the 2A.

In girls soccer, Westchester Country Day's Anna Beth Merritt in the 2A; High Point Christian's Chloe Ausburn in the 3A; and Wesleyan Christian's Kayla Burroughs in the 4A.

In softball, High Point Christian's Lexi Hall and Maci Burkhart in the 3A; and Wesleyan Christian's Bella Dunning in the 4A.

In boys tennis, Westchester Country Day's Max Verellen in the Division III.

In track and field, Westchester Country Day's Caleb Bayne (800m, 1600m), Cruz Hesling (3200m) and the 4x800 relay team of Hesling, Bayne, Tyler Matthews and George Culp in the Division III; and High Point Christian's Isaiah Sanders (100m, 200m) and Zoie Hembree (pole vault) in the Division II.

BISHOP McGUINNESS,

NORTH STOKES

KERNERSVILLE — North Stokes edged Bishop McGuinness 8-7 in Northwest 1A Conference baseball Friday at Bishop.

The Villains dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

EAST DAVIDSON, WEST DAVIDSON

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson topped West Davidson 1-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference baseball Friday at East.

Caden Adkins, Brock Welch and Phoenix Barrett each had a hit for the Golden Eagles (5-4 overall, 3-3 conference), who scored the lone run of the game in the second inning. Brannon Williamson got the win on the mound.

RAGSDALE, NORTHWEST GUILFORD

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale fell 11-0 against Northwest Guilford in Metro 4A Conference baseball Friday at Ragsdale.

The Tigers dipped to 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD, ASHEBORO

GREENSBORO — Southern Guilford lost 5-0 against Asheboro in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference baseball Friday at Southern.

The Storm dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

TRACK

AT SW GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford's boys and girls teams each took second place in Friday's meet against Reagan and Southern Guilford at Southwest.

Reagan's girls won with 92 points, followed by Southwest with 40 and Southern with 12. Reagan's boys won with 86 points, followed by Southwest with 42 and Southern with 22.

Winners for Southwest were: Nolan Williams (110m hurdles — 16.43); Kelis Miller (100m — 12.85; 200m — 26.87), William Sapp (100m — 10.73; 200m — 21.38), Christian Stamp (1600m — 4:33.20; 800m — 1:58.81), Sady Moody (discus — 121-01) and Tamya Davidson (shot put — 33.05.00).

Winners for Southern were: Keianna Mims (400m — 1:08.78), Nick Blackston (300m hurdles — 46.65) and Nicholas Epps (3200m — 9:57.34).

AT LEDFORD

WALLBURG — Ledford's boys won the team total while the girls took third during Thursday's meet against North Davidson, West Davidson and Thomasville at Ledford.

Ledford won the boys total with 97 points, followed by West Davidson with 67, Thomasville with 46 and North Davidson with 41. North Davidson won the girls total with 87 points, followed by West Davidson with 78.5, Ledford with 75.5 and Thomasville with six.

Winners for Ledford were: Samantha Flynn (100m hurdles — 17.88; 200m — 26.94), Easton Conrad (110m hurdles — 19.00), Isaac Reyna (1600m — 5:00.20; 3200m — 10:50.75), Dalton Zimmerman (200m — 21.72), Aramy Grier (long jump — 14.09.00), Rhianna Roberts (triple jump — 26.11.50), and the girls 4x800, 4x200 and 4x100 and boys 4x800, 4x200 and 4x100 relay teams.

Winners for Thomasville were: CJ Dickerson (100m — 10.98; long jump — 19-02.00), Jalen Powers (300m hurdles — 47.67) and Gabe Ray (triple jump — 42-00.75).

TENNIS

GLENN, REAGAN

PFAFFTOWN — Glenn lost 9-0 against Reagan in Central Piedmont 4A Conference girls tennis Friday at Reagan.

The Ladycats moved to 0-6 both overall and in the conference.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, SOUTH STOKES

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness rolled past South Stokes 9-0 in Northwest 1A Conference girls tennis Thursday at Fourth of July Park.

Lindsey Bergelin, Katie Dasher, Izzy Ross, Allie Dennen, Nina Holton and Caroline Gregory won in singles for the Villains (8-0 overall, 6-0 conference). Bergelin/Dasher, Holton/Gregory and Ross/Dennen won in doubles.

HPU SPORTS

BUIES CREEK — High Point University's baseball team ended its season with a doubleheader loss at Campbell on Friday.

The Camels took the first game 8-5 and the second 7-4 at Jim Perry Stadium. The losses pushed HPU's season-ending losing streak to 10 games, all against Big south teams..

The Panthers finish with a final record of 14-31, their first losing season under coach Craig Cozart since 2012, and a ninth-place finish in the conference at 12-25.

Campbell improved to 33-14 and earned the No. 1 seed for this week's Big South tournament in Fayetteville with a 28-9 mark. USC Upstate, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian earned the other sports in the four-team field.
