LOCAL ROUNDUP: Andrews, Southern and Oak Grove win conference tourney titles

Feb. 26—EDEN — Top-seeded T.W. Andrews rolled past second-seeded McMichael 73-41 in the Mid-State 2A Conference girls basketball tournament championship Friday at Morehead.

Sanai Johnson, Janiya Milligan and Journie Barr were selected to the all-tournament team. Johnson, the conference's player of the year, and Milligan earned tournament co-MVP. Coach John Shearin was coach of the year.

The Lady Raiders improved to 21-4.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD BOYS, SMITH

SUMNER — Top-seeded Southern Guilford edged second-seeded Smith 70-65 in the Mid-State 3A Conference boys basketball tournament championship Friday at Southern. The Storm improved to 26-1 overall.

OAK GROVE GIRLS, NORTH DAVIDSON

ASHEBORO — Top-seeded Oak Grove topped second-seeded North Davidson 47-38 in the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference girls basketball tournament championship Friday at Asheboro.

Kalin Favreau scored 19 points to lead the Grizzlies (24-2). Trista Charles added 13 points and six steals while Cora Hadley had seven points and five rebounds.

TRINITY BOYS, RANDLEMAN

RANDLEMAN — Second-seeded Trinity lost 69-47 against top-seeded Randleman in the PAC 1A/2A boys basketball tournament championship Friday at Randleman. The Bulldogs moved to 18-9 overall.

NCHSAA PLAYOFFS SETS

TRIAD — A dozen area high school basketball teams have qualified for the NCHSAA basketball playoffs.

On the boys, Thomasville and Bishop McGuinness in the 1A; Trinity in the 2A; Southern Guilford and Oak Grove in the 3A; and Southwest Guilford in the 4A will keep playing this week.

On the girls side, Bishop McGuinness in the 1A; T.W. Andrews, East Davidson and Wheatmore in the 2A; Oak Grove in the 3A; and Southwest Guilford in the 4A will also continue on.

Play will start with the opening round Tuesday. Thomasville's boys, Bishop's boys and girls, Southern's boys, Andrews' girls and Oak Grove's girls will play at home. The second round will be Friday.

The third and fourth rounds will follow the same schedule next week. The regional and state championships will be in two weeks at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
