Postgame rewind: Mistake-prone Jacksonville Jaguars flop vs. C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Travon Walker (44) pressures Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud (7) during the second quarter of an NFL football matchup Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023 at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. The Houston Texans defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-17. [Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union]

Now back to .500 after last week's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Jacksonville Jaguars remain at home at EverBank Stadium for Week 3 NFL football against the Houston Texans.

The AFC South matchup includes one young quarterback who's shown that he's on the rise in the Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence, and another hoping to get to that level soon in the Texans' C.J. Stroud. The rookie from Ohio State has shown plenty of promise (626 passing yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions) despite Houston's 0-2 start.

Houston had beaten the Jags nine consecutive times until Doug Pederson's team ended that drought in Week 17 last year, a 31-3 rout.

‘I bet y’all miss me': Former Jaguars' CB Shaq Griffin steps up to help Texans win

Shaq Griffin levied a big hit near the Jacksonville Jaguars’ sideline on Calvin Ridley and lingered a bit, exchanging pleasantries with his former team. Later, he flew in for a pass breakup near the same sideline, this time pausing after the play to send a cutting stare toward Jacksonville’s coaching staff. - Juston Lewis

Jaguars tailback Travis Etienne led a brief second-half comeback attempt against Houston

Whatever fleeting hopes the Jacksonville Jaguars had of overcoming a 17-0 halftime deficit on Sunday against the Houston Texans rested largely on the back of Travis Etienne. - Garry Smits

Jaguars look lifeless in 37-17 loss to Houston Texans. Here are our takeaways.

It was Groundhog Day for the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2) with nothing going their way through four quarters of the contest in the team's 37-17 loss to the Houston Texans (1-2). Reminiscent of their struggles from a season ago, the Jaguars never looked in control of the game Sunday, resulting in their fifth-straight loss to the Texans in Jacksonville. - Demetrius Harvey

FINAL: Texans 37, Jaguars 17

The Jaguars' Houston Hex continues with an ugly loss to the Texans. They've dropped to 1-2.

Field goal Texans: Ka'imi Fairbairn adds another kick

The margin is 20 points. C.J. Stroud is up to 20 for 30 for 280 yards and two touchdowns, chewing up the clock on a drive that ended with another Ka'imi Fairbairn kick. It's almost over at the Bank.

Texans 37, Jaguars 17, 2:10 4th.

Touchdown Texans: Daytona's Tank Dell catches C.J. Stroud TD pass on blown coverage

That might do it. On third down, the Jaguars sent pressure, but C.J. Stroud didn't panic in the pocket and instead found a completely open Tank Dell down the right sideline for a 69-yard score. The rookie from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach plagued the Jaguars again on his Florida return. The Jaguars' secondary lost Dell again and got burned.

Texans 34, Jaguars 17, 8:59 4th.

Touchdown Jaguars: Too little, too late? Trevor Lawrence connects with Christian Kirk on TD

That's the best drive of this game for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence guided that offense up the field, ending with a TD pass to a wide-open Christian Kirk. Kirk has been pretty quiet but his third reception of the afternoon is a score. The Jags are still down 10 points, though.

Texans 27, Jaguars 17, 10:40 4th.

Field goal Texans: Ka'imi Fairbairn adds to Houston lead

A rough game is getting rougher for the Jaguars. C.J. Stroud has moved that football smoothly for Houston all day long despite a depleted line, and this drive ends with a Ka'imi Fairbairn field goal. The Jags trail by three scores. Texans 27, Jaguars 10, 12:36 4th.

End of third quarter: Texans 24, Jaguars 10

It's been ugly for the Jags, now trailing by two touchdowns with Houston threatening to add on further. - Clayton Freeman

Interception: Texans' Blake Cashman picks off Trevor Lawrence

It's getting worse for the Jags. Trevor Lawrence looks over the middle on third down, and Blake Cashman -- who recovered the Jamal Agnew pass before halftime -- leans across to grab Lawrence's pass in front of Agnew. The Texans take over at the Jacksonville 49. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Texans: Fullback Andrew Beck picks up kickoff off ground, returns kickoff for 85-yard touchdown

Just when the Jaguars looked like clawing back into this game... a special teams disaster. A short kickoff was first muffed and then picked up by Houston fullback Andrew Beck, who eluded five tackles on an 85-yard return down the right sideline. Jags missed numerous opportunities to bring down Beck.

Texans 24, Jaguars 10, 4:19 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus converts 33-yard kick after long Evan Engram catch-and-run

It's back to a one-score game. The Jaguars are starting to find a rhythm on offense, connecting on a long catch-and-run from Trevor Lawrence to Evan Engram to the Houston 22. But the Texans downed a scrambling Lawrence short of the chains on third down, and the Jags settled for a Brandon McManus field goal from 33 yards.

Texans 17, Jaguars 10, 4:35 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Tank Bigsby puts Jacksonville on board

That's better from the Jaguars. Travis Etienne continues to power this offense, and he's now above 100 all-purpose yards on the game, moving the ball into Houston territory. Then, Trevor Lawrence passed deep to the end zone, where Houston's Jimmie Ward was flagged for pass interference on Calvin Ridley. From there, Tank Bigsby plowed into the end zone for Jacksonville's first touchdown in 17 drives. Hope for a comeback?

Texans 17, Jaguars 7, 11:17 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Second half kicks off: Trevor Lawrence and Jaguars' offense get the ball

The Jaguars have a 17-point deficit to make up, but at least they'll open the third quarter with the football. Can they rally against Houston? - Clayton Freeman

HALFTIME: Ka'imi Fairbairn boots field goal, Texans lead Jaguars 17-0 at break

That's the end of a miserable first half for the Jaguars against the Texans. CJ Stroud passed to Nico Collins, who ran through three missed tackles to the Jacksonville 10, setting up Ka'imi Fairbairn's field goal as the half expired. A lot for Doug Pederson and the Jags' staff to work on at the break.

Texans 17, Jaguars 0, halftime. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars fumble: Jamal Agnew loses the handle, Houston's Blake Cashman recovers

Just when the Jaguars' offense looked to be on the march... Jamal Agnew caught a third-and-10 pass from Trevor Lawrence for an apparent first down. But Eric Murray's hit jarred the football loose from the Jags' receiver, and Blake Cashman fell on the loose ball for the Texans. - Clayton Freeman

Two-minute warning: Trevor Lawrence and Jaguars are on the march

The Jaguars, down 14-0, are on the move after a Travis Etienne first down before the second-quarter two-minute warning. - Clayton Freeman

Fourth-down failure, again: Brandon Scherff penalty nullifies Calvin Ridley reception

The Jaguars went for fourth and 2. They converted, for a change, with Trevor Lawrence finding Calvin Ridley for the first down in Houston territory. Except... guard Brandon Scherff was flagged for illegal use of hands, wiping out the completion. Faced with fourth and long, the Jags punted away and another promising drive dissolved against the Texans. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Texans: C.J. Stroud finds Brevin Jordan, extends Houston lead

It's getting worse for the Jaguars against Houston. After Will Anderson blocked the field goal, C.J. Stroud and the Texans took advantage in a 41-yard march, capped with a third-down touchdown pass to Brevin Jordan. The boo-birds are beginning to surface at EverBank Stadium.

Texans 14, Jaguars 0, 7:27 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars denied again: Texans block Brandon McManus field goal

Another bad moment on special teams for the Jaguars: Doug Pederson called for Brandon McManus on fourth-and-short, but rookie Will Anderson broke in and slapped down the 51-yard attempt. Houston takes over on the Jaguars' 41 in prime position to extend the lead. Is the Houston Hex continuing? - Clayton Freeman

Injury update: Jaguars WR Calvin Ridley down after drop, hard hit

More bad news for the Jaguars: With Jacksonville driving across midfield, Calvin Ridley dropped a slant pass from Trevor Lawrence that would have gained a first down, then stayed down on the field after absorbing a hard impact from safety Jimmie Ward. He left the field slowly but under his own power. - Clayton Freeman

End of first quarter: Texans lead Jaguars after Dameon Pierce TD

That's 15 minutes in the books in the latest installment of this AFC South series. Texans 7, Jaguars 0.

Third-down woes continue for Jaguars: Travis Etienne, Trevor Lawrence tangled up on handoff

The Jaguars' third-down issues from the first two weeks are persisting early. Facing third-and-short at their own 45, the Jags stumbled when Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne appeared to get their legs tangled on a handoff, bringing the play to an end. The Jaguars elected to punt. Not an encouraging early start for Jacksonville. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Texans: Dameon Pierce finds end zone for Houston, after long pass to Daytona Beach's Tank Dell

Another round of woes for the Jaguars against Houston? They're off to a rocky start. After missing out on points on their own drive, the Jaguars saw the Texans strike fast. A long pass from C.J. Stroud to Daytona Beach Mainland High School graduate Tank Dell beat the secondary badly and advanced the football to the 1, and former Gator Dameon Pierce finished off the drive. Houston scores its first rushing TD of the year.

Texans 7, Jaguars 0, 7:35 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars come up empty after Calvin Ridley drop, Brandon McManus missed field goal

Opportunity missed for the Jags there. Trevor Lawrence found Calvin Ridley for a sure touchdown on second down, but the receiver dropped the ball -- and subsequently received attention from trainers. Then, after a Lawrence pass to Tim Jones came down out of bounds on third down, Brandon McManus missed a 48-yard field goal well wide right. Instead of 7-0 Jags, this ballgame remains scoreless.

Jamal Agnew hit on fair catch: Texans' 15-yard penalty sets up great Jaguars field position

The Jaguars open in excellent field position after forcing a three-and-out, which included a tackle for loss by Travon Walker. The Texans hit - barely - Jamal Agnew on a fair catch on the ensuing punt, starting the Jags in Houston territory. - Clayton Freeman
