The Cougars finished with 277 yards of total offense. First-time starter Jake Retzlaff threw for 210 yards in the loss.
Fourth quarter
West Virginia 37, BYU 7
6:24 — BYU finally got on the board on a 10-yard Aidan Robbins touchdown run. West Virginia 37, BYU 7.

That is Robbins’ first touchdown as a Cougar.
11:44 — Will Ferrin missed a 50-yard field goal on BYU’s deepest drive of the night, leaving the Cougars scoreless.
A false start and a screen pass for minus-11 yards pushed BYU out of the West Virginia red zone before Ferrin’s miss.
Third quarter
West Virginia 37, BYU 0
1:09 — Kole Taylor added the latest West Virginia touchdown, scoring on a 43-yard catch and run where the Mountaineers receiver broke a pair of tackles initially after catching the pass. West Virginia 37, BYU 0.

10:35 — Michael Hayes added his third field goal on the night — this one from 23 yards — for the first score of the second half. West Virginia 30, BYU 0.
The Cougars’ Keelan Marion returned the opening kickoff of the second half 91 yards for what appeared initially to be a rare BYU touchdown, but a holding penalty brought it all the way back to the Cougars 10, where BYU quickly went three-and-out.
Halftime
West Virginia 27, BYU 0
Nothing is going right for the Cougars tonight in Morgantown.
Visiting BYU trails by 27 after a disastrous effort in all facets, from offense to defense to special teams.
West Virginia has 352 yards of total offense at the half to just 156 for the Cougars.
BYU got the ball into Mountaineers territory on three of its five drives, but a fumble and two turnovers on downs sunk any scoring chances.
Second quarter
West Virginia 27, BYU 0
0:00 — Michael Hayes added another field goal, this one from 22 yards, to add to West Virginia’s lead as the half ended. West Virginia 27, BYU 0.
The drive was sparked by a highlight-worthy 38-yard catch from Devin Carter on a third-and-14 play that got the Mountaineers into BYU territory.

1:05 — Welp, any hopes of BYU scoring before halftime just went away after Parker Kingston was stripped of the ball on a nice pass play that would have set the Cougars up for at least a field-goal try.

2:18 — Put it on repeat — West Virginia touchdown.

It’s been a looooong half for the Cougars.
10:47 — West Virginia turned another BYU turnover on downs into points, this time adding a 46-yard field goal from Michael Hayes. West Virginia 17, BYU 0.
A small solace for BYU is that the Mountaineers short-circuited the end of that drive with some penalties, leading to a field goal.
13:50 — The Mountaineers forced the Cougars into a turnover on downs for the second time, as Jake Retzlaff couldn’t connect with Kody Epps on a fourth-and-2 at the West Virginia 35.
Even more worrisome — BYU’s already injury depleted wide receiver group saw both Chase Roberts and Epps shaken up at the tail end of that drive.
First quarter
West Virginia 14, BYU 0
6:17 — The Mountaineers quickly turned BYU’s first gaffe of the game — a failed fourth-down conversion — into points, as CJ Donaldson scored his second touchdown on a 1-yard run. West Virginia 14, BYU 0.
Garrett Greene completed three straight passes for 42 yards to jumpstart the drive.

8:07 — BYU’s first possession — under new starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff — was stopped on a failed fourth-down conversion near midfield, giving West Virginia good field position for its second drive.
9:59 — The Mountaineers took the opening drive for a score, with CJ Donaldson’s 2-yard touchdown capping the possession. West Virginia 7, BYU 0.
