Little-known tight ends deliver big fantasy days in Week 8

Let’s take a moment to talk about the top-five scoring tight ends before Sunday Night Football in Week 8:

1) Ryan Griffin, New York Jets

2) Darren Fells, Houston Texans

3) Jonnu Smith, Tennessee Titans

4) Austin Hooper, Atlanta Falcons

5) Evan Engram, New York Giants

Yes, on #NationalTightEndsDay, the top-scoring options were a who’s-who of “Huh?!”

You can imagine how fantasy gamers would feel about this — so, we decided to ask:

TE No. 3 on that list, Jonnu Smith — who is currently rostered in just 19 percent of leagues —has now delivered back-to-back quality weeks while filling in for Delanie Walker, and he helped this fantasy player to what looks to be a solid victory:

Unfortunately, this manager benched Smith in Week 8 — but all is not lost. Their hopes lie with another tight end — fingers crossed, indeed:

The second-highest scoring tight end, Darren Fells, went off in Week 8 to the tune of 6 catches, 58 yards, and 2 TDs (and helped his QB, Deshaun Watson, deliver a highlight-worthy play), and this gamer might be convinced of his season-long services (Fells is rostered in just 18% of leagues):

What makes these performances so special is that, before fantasy season, none of these tight ends (save Engram) even sniffed the top five in ADP. One who seemed like a clear-cut top five option before the season is Zach Ertz, but he isn’t on the above list. In fact, Ertz finished outside the top 20 in the Week 8. So you can imagine that, after we asked about #NationalTightEndsDay, some frustrated players replied like this:

Unfortunately for everyone who rosters Ertz, his backup, Dallas Goedert, found the end zone, so you can imagine how happy this manager was that a tight end started in just 20% of leagues returned his faith in him:
