Lions notch ninth straight win

Jan. 17—The Missouri Southern women's basketball team (12-4, 8-2) extended its win streak to nine games and retained sole possession of first place in the MIAA with a 69-50 win over Washburn on Wednesday at Washburn's Lee Arena in Topeka.

The loss was the first for the Ichabods this season at home and the lowest point total for Washburn this season. Washburn was 6-0 at home entering Wednesday's game against the Lions.

The Ichabods held a small 8-6 lead until MSSU's Kryslyn Jones tied the game at 2:37 with a driving layup. The Lions took the lead at 9-8 off a Brandi Hudson free throw and never gave up that lead the remainder of the game.

The Lions held a 12-11 advantage after the first period and capitalized on a stingy defense that allowed no field goals in the second quarter and held the Ichabods to just 26.8% shooting.

Southern outscored Washburn 16-1 in that second frame to take a 28-12 lead into halftime.

The Lions also controlled the third quarter and extended their lead to 50-29 going into the fourth quarter.

Southern led by as many as 23 points in the final quarter. The Ichabods outscored the Lions 21-19 in the final frame.

Ryan Franklin led the Lions in scoring with 20 points. Hudson pitched in with 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Morgan Meyers was 3 for 4 from behind the arc for a season-high nine points and Kaitlin Hunnicutt logged four assists and three steals for Southern. The Lions' bench accounted for 49 of Southern's 69 points.

The Lions travel to Emporia State (9-7, 6-4) on Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. game before returning to Leggett & Platt for two games. Emporia upset No. 25 Pittsburg State (12-4, 6-4) 71-59 in the MIAA's other Wednesday game.

Southern will host Northeastern State (8-7, 4-5) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, before facing Rogers State (7-8, 2-7) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at MSSU.
