Lions cruise past Cardinals

Feb. 13—The Loogootee Lions looked prepared and ready for the post-season with a win over a potential sectional foe in the Birdcage on Tuesday.

The Lions posted a dominant 79-13 victory over Washington Catholic, showcasing Isaac Waggner with 16 points, Leighton Jeffers, who did most of his damage from behind the arc with 14, while Drew Walker had 13 and AJ Foster had 11 in limited action returning from injury.

"AJ has been out for nearly a month, so it was nice to get him out there and start playing again. WC is still rebuilding so it was nice to come in and work on some things. I was pleased with the way we played," said LHS coach Dave Smith, as his Lions moved to 12-7 with the Blue Chip win.

WC got seven points from senior Isaac Halter, four from senior Justin Sipes and two from Aiden Henry, as they dropped to 1-18 and remain winless in the Blue Chip.

Lions Brandon Bledsoe and Jeffers gave Loogootee a 5-0 lead to start the game, while Waggner and Drew Walker quickly made it 9-0. Waggner and AJ Foster pushed the margin to 17-2, as Aiden Henry picked up WC's first bucket. Wade Walton added a Lion trey in the final seconds, and LHS ended the quarter with a 23-2 lead. WC was also hurt by 11 turnovers during the quarter.

The Lions went up by 30 at 5:43 of the second, before Sipes added the Cards second basket. Waggner added three more baskets, along with Will Lyons first basket of the night, as Loogootee took a 38-4 lead.

Halter added a WC 3-pointer but Walton added two more baskets and Christian Garcia had the final basket of the quarter, allowing the Lions to go up by 39, at 47-8.

The second half started with an IHSAA-mandated running clock and Jeffers opened the third with his second trey of the night. Sipes did add five points for WC but Loogootee pushed the margin to 60-13. Jeffers third trey gave the Lions a 50-point lead. Jeffers and Foster were then able to push the lead out to 70-13 at the end of the third.

The Lions were able to stretch their bench throughout the fourth moving the margin to 60. Wade Walton added a Lion triple and LHS went up 79-13 with 2:00 to play. The Cardinals were held scoreless in the final quarter.

There was no JV game played. Loogootee plays Dubois on Friday, while WC travels to Medora on Saturday.
