Lions back on track with win over UNK

Feb. 22—The Missouri Southern women's basketball team (19-6, 15-4) put the brakes on a two-game skid with an 86-75 win over Nebraska-Kearney (18-8, 12-8) on Thursday at UNK.

UNK led by as many as seven at 13-6 at 5:54 of the first quarter, but MSSU's Kryslyn Jones hit her third trey of the quarter to pull the Lions within 4 at 13-9. The Lions closed out the quarter with a Kaitlin Hunnicutt 3-pointer that put the Lions up 20-19.

The Lions nearly doubled up the Lopers in the second period, outscoring UNK 24-14. MSSU held its largest lead of the game at 16 with 1:59 left on another Hunnicutt trey that put MSSU up 41-25.

The Lions held their lead and went into the locker room with a 44-31 advantage.

UNK cut into the Lion lead, outscoring MSSU 25-19 in the third period. The teams entered the fourth quarter with MSSU up 9 at 65-56.

The Lopers got within 6 points at 69-63 on a Julia Aschoff jumper with 6:35 left, but that is as close as they could get, as MSSU outscored them 17-12 down the stretch to secure the win.

Jones led the Lions with 23 points. Ryan Franklin added 20 and Hunnicutt 19. The Lions had another strong performance from their bench, outscoring UNK 42-6.

Meg Burns paced the Lopers with 18 points. Jillian Aschoff had 16 and Samantha Moore finished with 13.

Th Lions travel to Hays, Kansas, for their last regular-season road game of the year on Saturday to face Fort Hays State.
