Lion women make it a baker's dozen with 40-point win

Feb. 1—The Missouri Southern women's basketball team finished with four players in double figures and logged its 13th straight win with a 77-37 victory over the Newman Jets on Thursday in Wichita.

Newman stayed within arm's reach of the Lions and closed out the first quarter down just 1, at 14-13, but MSSU took control in the second period and outscored the Jets 19-9 to take a 33-22 lead into halftime.

The Lions (16-4, 12-2) gave up just 5 points in the third quarter, while putting up 24 and led 57-27 going into the final frame. That third quarter included a 17-0 run in which MSSU held Newman scoreless for about eight minutes.

Southern did not let up on the gas in the final frame, outscoring the Jets 20-10 en route to the 77-37 win.

Ryan Franklin led the Lions with 13 points and seven rebounds. Brandi Hudson added 12 points, Kaitlin Hunnicutt logged 11, and Kryslyn Jones had 10.

Valeriya Lioukina paced the Jets with 9 points, while Amiya Josey had 8.

The Lions travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, on Saturday for an MIAA game against Central Oklahoma. They return home Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game against Lincoln and will meet Central Missouri at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
