Lindsey Vonn speaks on 'devastating' Florida shooting: 'I can't understand it'

U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn had a disappointing start to her first Olympic Games in eight years. A wide turn in Saturday’s Super-G left her off the podium in sixth place.

The result surfaced a horde of Twitter trolls and angry Donald Trump supporters who reveled in her loss after she had publicly criticized the U.S. president.

But Yahoo’s Jeff Passan and Evan Doherty report that Vonn remains upbeat as she feels confident preparing for her downhill showdown on Wednesday with Mikaela Shiffrin.

She echoed those sentiments on Twitter.

She also used her platform after the race to speak out on the tragic school shooting in Florida this week that left 17 dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“I feel like these headlines are all too often the first thing I see when I wake up,” Vonn told reporters. “I can’t understand it, and it’s so devastating for everyone in Florida and everyone involved. I am sending them my best. America is behind you.”

Vonn, who is rarely shy to speak her mind, has clearly not been dissuaded by her social media critics.

With the spotlight set to shine brighter on Vonn in PyeongChang, Vonn will have more opportunity to speak out.
