Lightsey pitches AAA Packers to 2-1 victory over Syrupmakers

Mar. 19—MOULTRIE — Davis Lightsey gave up just one unearned run in pitching the Colquitt County AAA baseball team to a 2-1 victory over the Cairo junior varsity team on Monday in Cairo.

The AA Packers scored five runs in the top of the fifth to earn a 6-6 tie with the JV Syrupmakers in the other game of Monday's doubleheader.

The AAA Packers scored both of their runs in the top of the second.

Ethan Allegood walked to open the inning and scored on a double by Carter Penuel.

A one-out single by Jesus Vazquez drove in Penuel and the Packers led 2-0.

A pair of Colquitt County errors led to Cairo scoring its only run in the bottom of the second.

But Lightsey allowed just one hit and one walk over the final three innings to get the win.

In addition to the double by Penuel and the single by Vazquez, the Packers also got base hits from Carter Summerlin, Rylan Howell and Tyson Samples.

Howell continues to lead the 6-3 AAA team in hitting with a .435 average. Allegood is hitting .400.

Summerlin has two doubles and two triples on the season.

In the AA game, Cairo scored one run in the first inning and five in the second to take a 6-1 lead, but then were held scoreless the rest of the way by relievers Parker Goss, Adan Cardenas and Luke Strong.

Each of the three pitched one inning and none gave up a hit.

Goss and Cardenas each struck out two Syrupmakers and Strong fanned one.

The AA Packers had three hits, singles by Davis Wingate, Judson Taylor and Ovidio Ibarra.

The AAA and AA Packers are scheduled to travel to Thomasville for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, March 20.
