Lewis-Clark State women's basketball extends winning streak to 11

Feb. 4—The No. 7 Lewis-Clark State women's basketball team increased its winning streak to 11 games with a 63-59 decision over Cascade Conference opponent Eastern Oregon on Saturday at the P1FCU Activity Center.

Senior guard Callie Stevens spearheaded the Warriors offensive attack and scored a game-high 29 points on 11-of-19 shooting.

"Our team battled so hard tonight, and I am so incredibly proud of their poise and relentless work ethic," Lewis-Clark State coach Caelyn Orlandi said. "Eastern Oregon is a great team, well coached, and shoots and rebounds the ball very well. Every time we started to pull away, Eastern Oregon fought back into the game. Our team found a way to win tonight and protect our home court."

It was a teeter-totter affair between the Cascade Conference rivals that featured nine lead changes, and neither team had more than a five-point advantage.

Stevens scored the Warriors' first seven points to put them in front 7-5 with 8:31 left in the first quarter.

"Callie Stevens was so tough tonight and did a tremendous job offensively," Orlandi said. "She had four assists to go with her 29 points and saw the floor well tonight. She stepped up and hit big shot after big shot down the stretch."

A 5-0 run from the Mountaineers put them ahead 30-25 with 4:00 remaining in the first half. But junior guard Ellie Sander and freshman Darian Herring converted three consecutive baskets to put the Warriors back in the driver's seat, 31-30, at the break.

Junior forward Mataya Green helped put L-C (19-2, 11-1) on the scoreboard first in the second half, capping off an 8-0 run.

The score was tied at 46 to start the fourth quarter, and Sander responded by scoring five consecutive points to give the Warriors a 51-46 edge with 7:07 left in regulation.

L-C traded baskets with the Mountaineers (14-6, 10-6) as the game neared its conclusion, and a Bayley Brennan 3-pointer gave the latter a 59-58 edge with 1:59 remaining.

Stevens answered with a short jumper to give the Warriors the lead for good, 60-59, with 1:42 left in regulation.

Sander notched 12 points and four steals for Lewis-Clark State, and Wilson added eight points.

Sophomore Sitara Byrd and Herring combined for 14 rebounds.

Brie Holecek led all Mountaineer scorers with 17 points. Haley Robinnett and Brennan each contributed 12 points.
