Leonard Fournette asked the Bucs to release him

Unsurprisingly, reports began to swirl Tuesday that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be releasing veteran running back Leonard Fournette.

As it turns out, it was Fournette himself who spearheaded the decision.

After the 2022 season, Fournette requested that the team release him, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Fournette spent three seasons in Tampa Bay, with plenty of impressive highs, including a dominant Super Bowl run and a stellar follow-up campaign in 2021. But he took a back seat to third-round rookie Rachaad White last year, and appears to have seen the writing on the wall regarding his potential role for the 2023 season.
