Left-wingers and right-wingers tend to fantasise about rather different things, a new study found – and the fantasies seem to reflect their politics.

Researchers Justin Lehmiller of Ball State University, Indiana asked 4,175 adults (who identified as Democrat or Republican supporters) what they fantasised about.

Republican supporters (right-wingers, broadly speaking) tended to fantasise about infidelity – such as watching a partner have sex with someone else.

Democrat supporters (left-wingers, broadly speaking) tended to fantasise about bondage and BDSM, IFLScience reported.

Lehmiller believes the fantasies reflect people’s respective taboos – ie straying from the Republican ideal of the nuclear family, and going against the idea of equality, a Democratic ideal, via dominance and control.

The research also found that Sarah Palin was the most widely fantasised-about politician in America – and that her appeal straddled both parties.
