Lee softball scores second straight blowout

Mar. 21—Teams in the Sandhills Athletic Conference are all too accustomed to the Richmond Raiders doing their thing. However, there was no raiding being done Tuesday night in Rockingham. Richmond had its hands full with a swarm of angry Yellow Jackets.

The Lee County softball team jumped on its hosts for five quick runs before the Lady Raiders even came to bat, leading from wire to wire in what became a 13-1 mercy-rule blowout and the second big win in a row for the Lady Jackets.

Lee, which started the season 0-4 against a difficult early-season slate of games, has now won two straight contests in SAC play, downing Pinecrest 10-0 on Friday before hitting the road again to face the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Jackets added two runs in the third, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning. Richmond (4-3, 3-2 SAC) needed three runs in its turn at bat in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game going, but didn't score.

Lee County senior pitcher Savanna Mullins threw a two-hitter, allowing one unearned run in the fourth inning while striking out six. She was equally devastating at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and four RBI. Teammate Imani Chubbs also got in on the fun, going 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI.

The fireworks started right away. Kallie Byrd was hit by a pitch to start things off. Kasie Roberts followed with a single, and then Mullins doubled to give herself the only run she'd need as a pitcher. But Lee's other players weren't stopping there. Chubbs singled to drive in Roberts, and then Sophia Scott doubled with one out to score both Mullins and Chubbs for a 4-0 lead. Scott scored thanks to a wild pitch and a passed ball before the inning ended.

Chubbs led off the Lee third with a solo home run. Later in the inning, Cherish Smith singled and came in to score on a Kendall Mims ground ball.

Mullins went yard with one out in the fourth after a walk to Roberts. A two-RBI single for Victoria Smith as a pinch-hitter later in the inning scored Chubbs and Cherish Smith to make the score 11-0. Mullins doubled following a Byrd single in the fifth and then came in to score herself to finish up.

Chubbs was 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and four RBI. Byrd had two hits and Smith had two RBI.

The Lady Jackets hosted Douglas Byrd Wednesday night and will host Scotland tonight at 7 p.m.
