The Larry O'Brien Trophy typically only dabbles in short-term relationships. Rarely does the gold hardware commit to one team for more than two or three years.
Between 2016, their last relationship, and 2020, their current relationship, LeBron has accused the trophy of cheating on him.
Jokingly, of course. The trophy is an inanimate object after all.
"I can't believe you cheated on me for the last five years. You dirty," James said while being recorded by Lakers center JaVale McGee shortly after the team won the title last Sunday. "I can't believe you cheated on me the last four years. What is wrong with you? I'm going to bring your ass home ... "
As you can see, LeBron caught himself. First he said five years. Then he remembered that he had a one-year relationship with the trophy in 2016 when his Cleveland Cavaliers completed a three-games-to-one comeback to beat the Warriors in the NBA Finals.
Since the last time LeBron and the trophy were dating, the Warriors entered into a two-year relationship from 2017 through 2018. The Warriors were hoping to extend the pact to three years, but the Toronto Raptors had other ideas in 2019 and stole the trophy away from them.
Now, the Larry O'Brien Trophy has returned to the warm embrace of LeBron.
The Larry O'Brien Trophy just isn't into long-term relationships, so it shouldn't surprise anyone if it comes back to the Bay Area next summer.
