The Toronto Maple Leafs' newfound defensive depth will be tested for the first time this season with a key blueliner going down with injury.

Toronto announced Monday that Jake Muzzin will miss some time after suffering a broken bone in his face when absorbing a follow through on a shot from Tyler Toffoli in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

As a result of the wayward blade, Muzzin will be sidelined for at least Monday's contest versus the Calgary Flames as the Leafs medical team continues to work on determining the extent of the injury and methods to manage it.

Making matters worse, the Maple Leafs will also be without Zach Hyman and Joe Thornton against the Flames. Hyman was again hobbled by a blocked shot and remains day to day, while Thornton is looking at a similar timetable while dealing with an undisclosed injury.

Hyman and Thornton have both been banged up already this season.

Mikko Lehtonen will draw in for Muzzin, while forwards Nic Petan and Alexander Barabanov will check back into Sheldon Keefe's lineup. Lines and pairings are still to be determined with three key contributors unable to go.

Muzzin is second in scoring among Leafs defencemen with one goal and 12 points this season.
