For the second time in a span of eight hours Monday, Michigan football lost a defensive player to the NCAA transfer portal.

In this instance, William Mohan walked through the door.

The former three-star recruit and redshirt freshman was a member of the Wolverines' 2020 signing class.

Last fall, he debuted for one snap in Michigan's victory over Minnesota during the opening weekend of the Big Ten's truncated season.

But he didn't play again, and his status on the team became uncertain when Michigan moved on from defensive coordinator Don Brown last December.

Brown's replacement, Mike Macdonald, abandoned the Viper role, which Mohan played in his lone appearance.

As spring practice continues for the Wolverines, Mohan's departure further impinges the team's depth. He becomes the ninth Michigan player to enter the NCAA transfer portal since the start of 2021 and the third member of the 2020 class to do so. Previously, defensive end Aaron Lewis and linebacker Osman Savage left the program to continue their college career elsewhere.
