Derek Jeter, Larry Walker elected to Hall of Fame
UNDATED (AP) — Derek Jeter and Larry Walker will be giving speeches in Cooperstown, New York, this summer.
Jeter was a near-unanimous selection for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The former Yankees shortstop and longtime team captain appeared on all but one of the 397 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Walker will join Jeter on the induction stage after being elected in his 10th year on the ballot. Walker was named on 76.57% of the ballots, just above the required 75%.
Jeter won five World Series while batting .310 with 260 home runs and 1,311 RBIs in a 20-year career spent entirely with the Yankees. Walker spent 17 seasons in the majors, hitting .313 with 383 home runs and 1,311 RBIs for the Expos, Rockies and Cardinals.
Pitcher Curt Schilling was third with 278 votes (70%) in his eighth ballot appearance.

— The Braves and free-agent outfielder Marcell Ozuna (oh-ZOO’-nuh) have worked out a one-year, $18 million deal that puts him on the team he helped beat in the playoffs last October. Ozuna hit .429 with two home runs for the St. Louis Cardinals in their five-game win over the Braves in the NL Division Series. He batted .241 with 29 home runs and 89 RBIs during the regular season.
— The Red Sox say second baseman Dustin Pedroia (peh-DROY'-uh) has suffered a significant setback while rehabbing his left knee injury. It is the latest blow to the four-time All-Star's attempt to return to the field. The 2008 American League MVP has been on the mend since 2017. Pedroia has had multiple surgeries on the knee, has been limited to just nine games over the past two seasons.
— The Los Angeles City Council wants Major League Baseball to strip the Astros and Red Sox of their World Series titles and award the trophies to the Dodgers. The symbolic resolution, meant as a statement against cheating, was introduced after it was revealed that the Astros used a system by then-coach Alex Cora in 2017 to tip off batters on what pitch was to be thrown.
— The Cubs have acquired reliever Travis Lakins from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named or cash. The 25-year-old right-hander debuted with Boston last season and posted a 3.86 ERA in 16 games.

Brawl caps Kansas-Kansas State game
UNDATED (AP) — Kansas and Kansas State renewed their rivalry on Tuesday, and the end was rather ugly.
The third-ranked Jayhawks rolled to an 81-60 win over the Wildcats in a game that was capped by a wild melee behind a basket. Kansas was trying to run out the clock when Silvio De Sousa was stripped by the Wildcats' DaJuan Gordon near midcourt and Gordon tried to go in for a layup. De Sousa recovered and blocked his shot, sending Gordon to the floor, then stood over him barking.
That triggered benches to empty and punches to be thrown in what amounted to a rugby scrum. At one point, De Souza picked up a stool and held it above his head, looking like he was about to swing it at a Kansas State player before assistant coach Jerrance Howard grabbed it from him.
Christian Braun scored a career-high 20 points and Devon Dotson added 18 as Kansas improved to 15-3. Udoka Azubuike (oo-DOH’-kah az-oo-BOO’-kay) finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds to help the Jayhawks beat the Wildcats for the 14th straight time at Allen Fieldhouse.
In other top-25 finals:
— Saddiq Bey (sah-DEEK bay) hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points in ninth-ranked Villanova’s 76-61 win against No. 13 Butler. Jermaine Samuels had 20 points in helping the 15-3 Wildcats send the Bulldogs to their third consecutive loss.
— Ashton Hagans scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half to help 15th-ranked Kentucky close out an 89-79 victory over Georgia. The Wildcats led just 55-52 until Keion Brooks Jr. scored six points during a 14-4 run.
— Jalen Smith dropped in a career-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as No. 17 Maryland topped Northwestern, 77-66. Aaron Wiggins had 17 points in the Terrapins’ first win in five road games.
— Desmond Bane scored 27 points and TCU returned home following an 0-2 road trip to beat No. 18 Texas Tech, 65-54. Kevin Samuel grabbed 11 rebounds and had 11 points, including three straight baskets that put the Horned Frogs ahead by double-digits.
— No. 21 Illinois was a 79-62 winner at Purdue behind Kofi Cockburn’s 22 points and 15 rebounds. Trent Frazier added 21 points for the Illini, who have won five straight Big Ten games for the first time in nearly seven years.

Evansville makes coaching change
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Evansville men’s basketball coach Walter McCarty has been fired and replaced by assistant Bernie Seltzer for the remainder of the season.
McCarty was placed on administrative leave on Dec. 26 so university officials could investigate allegations of sexual misconduct and violations of the school's Title IX policy.

Isles double up Rangers
UNDATED (AP) — The third time was a charm for the New York Islanders against the Rangers.
The Isles avenged their two losses to the Rangers last week as Josh Bailey delivered a goal and two assists in the Islanders’ 4-2 win at Madison Square Garden. Brock Nelson netted his team-high 20th of the season for the Islanders, who also got goals from Anthony Beauvillier (boh-VIH’-lee-ay) and Anders Lee.
Thomas Greiss (grys) stopped 40 shots and blanked the Rangers until Pavel Buchnevich (booch-NEH’-vihch) scored on a power play with 6:15 remaining.
Elsewhere on NHL ice:
— The Bruins pulled out a 3-2 win over the Golden Knights on David Krejci (KRAY’-cheez) goal with 7:42 left. Jake DeBrusk tied it early in the third period and Krejci also assisted on Jeremy Lauzon’s first goal of the season. Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots as Boston entered the All-Star break with a win following a 1-2-1 stretch.
— Brian Elliott stopped 19 shots and the Flyers made it five wins in their last seven games by blanking the Penguins, 3-0. Jakub Voracek and James van Riemsdyk to back Elliott’s first shutout of the season and 39th of his career. Justin Braun added an empty-netter for Philadelphia, which dealt Pittsburgh just its fourth in 19 games since Dec. 12.
— Justin Williams scored twice in his second game back in the leading to push the Hurricanes past the Jets, 4-1. Williams scored the winning goal in a shootout for a 2-1 win over the Islanders in his first game after signing a free-agent contract with Carolina. Teuvo Teravainen (TOO’-voh tehr-ah-VY’-nehn) had a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes, who reached the All-Star break with two straight wins after a three-game skid.

Day 3 sked in progress
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Play is underway on Day 3 at the Australian Open.
Top women’s seed and defending champion Naomi Osaka won her second-round match by overcoming swirling winds on Margaret Court Arena to beat Zheng Saisai 6-2, 6-4.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIH’-toh-vah) saved three set points in the second set before beating Paula Badosa 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the third round. Kvitova lost last year's final here to Osaka.
Also advancing to the third round were No. 14-seeded Sofia Kenin, No. 18 Alison Riske, No. 25 Ekaterina Alexandrova and Julia Goerges, who beat 13th-seeded Petra Martic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Men’s sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas got a walkover into the third round when Philipp Kohlschreiber pulled out of their scheduled match because a muscle strain.
Top seed Ash Barty and Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch) will hit the Rod Laver Arena court to conclude the day session. Serena Williams and Roger Federer will make up the night session on the main court.

Beckham recovering from surgery
UNDATED (AP) — Cleveland Browns star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is recovering from surgery to repair a core muscle injury.
Beckham played most of last season with a sports hernia. He didn't miss a game, but the three-time Pro Bowler didn't make the same kind of game-breaking plays that made him so dangerous for the New York Giants. A full recovery is expected.

— Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (TOO'-ah tuhng-ah-vy-LOH'-ah), Ohio State defensive end Chase Young and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor are among 99 juniors granted eligibility by the NFL into the draft. The league released the official list of 120 players entering the draft.

Magic Johnson at Stern memorial: I'm going to miss my angel
UNDATED (AP) — Current and former NBA stars gathered in New York Tuesday in a 2 ½ hour tribute to former NBA commissioner David Stern, who died earlier this month after a brain hemorrhage.
A tearful Magic Johnson called Stern “his angel.” Johnson recalled how Stern supported him playing in the 1992 All-Star Game despite some players concerns and fears about Johnson being HIV positive.
Others former stars who packed Radio City Music Hall included big men Bill Russell and Yao Ming to dazzling distributors such as Johnson and Isiah Thomas. Stern spent 30 years as commissioner. All credited Stern with popularizing the NBA.

— The Portland Trail Blazers have pulled off a multi-player deal that brings them Trevor Ariza (ah-REE’-zah), Wenyen Gabriel and Caleb Swanigan from the Sacramento Kings for Kent Bazemore, Anthony Tolliver and two second-round draft picks. Ariza is a 15-year-veteran who was averaging six points and 4.6 rebounds for the Kings this season. Bazemore has started 21 of his 43 games this season, averaging 7.9 points and four rebounds.
DOCTOR-SEXUAL ASSAULT-COACH
Investigators search home, gym of coach tied to Nassar
GRAND LEDGE, Mich. (AP) — Michigan authorities have searched the home and former gym of a gymnastics coach who had ties to disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar.
The Lansing State Journal posted photos of a man with a police coat carrying a box away from John Geddert’s house near Lansing, Michigan.
A spokesman for the state attorney general says Geddert was a U.S. Olympics gymnastics coach who worked closely with Nassar and at whose gymnastics club, Twistars, many of the Nassar victims were abused.
