Here’s the latest on Giants head coach Brian Daboll's staff for the 2023 season...

Mar. 6, 12:10 p.m.

The Giants announced several changes to Brian Daboll's coaching staff, including hiring Jeff Nixon as the team's new running backs coach.

Nixon served as the Carolina Panthers' assistant head coach last year, and spent time as the team’s senior offensive assistant/running backs coach and interim offensive coordinator during his three years in Carolina. He replaces DeAndre Smith, who left to join the Indianapolis Colts' staff. Nixon worked the same position under Daboll during his time as the Miami Dolphins' offensive coordinator in 2011.

Additionally, the Giants named Stephen Thomas their new assistant special teams coach after he spent the past four seasons as the Detroit Lions’ defensive quality control coach.

New York also named Chris Smith as the assistant offensive line coach after six seasons at Holy Cross. Smith served as the Holy Cross offensive coordinator in 2022 and helped lead the Crusaders to 12 wins while averaging 37.4 points per game.

Michael Treier was promoted from assistant defensive backs coach to safeties, and Christian Jones was promoted from offensive assistant to assistant quarterbacks coach. Angela Baker, who served as an offensive quality control coach last year, was promoted to offensive assistant.

Lastly, Christian Daboll, Brian Daboll's son, was named an offensive assistant. He's been a student coach for the past four years, one at the University of Alabama and the last three at Penn State.

Feb. 27, 10:20 a.m.

Tony Sparano Jr. is leaving Brian Daboll's staff after one season to join the Indianapolis Colts' staff as an offensive line coach, according to Art Stapleton.

Sparano served as the Giants' assistant offensive line coach in 2022 after he served in the same position with the Carolina Panthers (2021) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-2020).

He is the son of Tony Sparano, the longtime NFL coach and one-time Jets offensive coordinator (2012).

Feb. 7:43 p.m.

The Giants have found their new running backs coach. According to multiple reports, Big Blue will hire Jeff Nixon for the upcoming season.

Nixon, who was the Carolina Panthers assistant head coach last season, will take over duties for DeAndre Smith. Smith left the Giants to join the Indianapolis Colts and new coach Shane Steichen's staff.

Nixon was the running backs coach when Giants coach Brian Daboll was the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2011.

It looks like Giants fans are getting their wish, as both OC Mike Kafka and DC Wink Martindale appear set to return to the team in 2023.

Kafka had been a finalist for both the Colts and Cardinals head coaching jobs, but those spots have now been filled by former Eagles coordinators Shane Steichen (Colts) and Jonathan Gannon (Cardinals).

Gannon's hiring in Arizona was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Feb. 12, 11:37 a.m.

The Colts are targeting Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to be their next head coach, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Steichen heading to the Colts would be good on two fronts for the Giants, as it would take a coach away from a division rival, and also make it more likely that Mike Kafka returns as offensive coordinator.

The lone remaining opening is with the Arizona Cardinals, and while Kafka is in the running there, reports on Sunday indicated that Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will interview with Arizona on Monday, and could be the leading candidate.

Feb. 10, 11:01 a.m.

Giants DC Wink Martindale has been told he's out of the running for the Indianapolis Colts' head coaching job, per multiple reports.

The Colts job was the only one Martindale had still been linked to, with the other head coaching openings he interviewed for earlier this offseason already filled.

As far as the Giants' other top coordinator, OC Mike Kafka remains in the running for the Arizona Cardinals' head coaching job, which could be filled soon after the Super Bowl.

Feb. 7, 5:44 p.m.

Andy Reid is about to coach in his third Super Bowl in the last four years, but he took some time to offer his endorsement of Giants OC Mike Kafka for the Arizona Cardinals’ vacant head coaching position.

Reid spoke with Cardinals owner Michael Bidwell to express his support for Kafka, who coached with Reid in Kansas City from 2017-21.

"He’s a very intelligent, great human being,” Reid said, via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. “The quarterback will love him. He’ll challenge him to be better than he even is now. But he’ll do a great job.''

Kafka and Cincinnati Bengals DC Lou Anarumo are the two known finalists for the Cardinals job.

Feb. 6, 9:06 a.m.

Giants OC Mike Kafka is one of three known finalists for the Arizona Cardinals' head coaching job, reports Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Per Fowler, Cincinnati Bengals DC Lou Anarumo and Pittsburgh Steelers LB coach Brian Flores are also finalists for the job.

Kafka recently had his second interview with the Cardinals, and his next interview is scheduled for Tuesday, according to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson.

Jan. 31, 6:57 p.m.

Giants QB coach Shea Tierney has completed his interview for the Tampa Buccaneers' offensive coordinator role, the team announced Tuesday night.

Tierney has been with the Giants ever since head coach Brian Daboll arrived. He spent the past four seasons working on his staff with the Buffalo Bills, first as an offensive assistant before serving as the assistant quarterbacks coach.

Tierney also worked with Daboll for two seasons at the University of Alabama.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is looking for a replacement after the team dismissed offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich following their playoff defeat to the Dallas Cowboys.

Jan. 31, 4:31 p.m.

Potential landing spots for Giants OC Mike Kafka are shrinking.

Kafka has interviewed with the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and Carolina Panthers for their head coaching jobs.

But it was reported earlier Tuesday that Kafka was not among the finalists for the Colts job, the Texans job was taken on Tuesday by DeMeco Ryans, and the Panthers job was recently filled by Frank Reich.

Ryans, the San Francisco 49ers' former DC, agreed to a six-year deal with the Texans, per multiple reports.

Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos -- who were also reported to be interested in Kafka -- are set to make Sean Payton their head coach.

That would seemingly leave only the Arizona Cardinals as a potential landing spot for Kafka.

Jan. 31, 11:40 a.m.

While Giants coordinators Mike Kafka and Wink Martindale have both interviewed with the Indianapolis Colts for their vacant head coaching position, it sounds like the Colts have narrowed their search.

According to Zak Keefer of The Athletic, the Colts are currently considering seven finalists, with Martindale included and Kafka left off the list.

Per The Athletic, the Colts are still considering Martindale, interim coach Jeff Saturday, Broncos DC Ejiro Evero, Rams DC Raheem Morris, Packers ST coordinator Rich Bisaccia, Eagles OC Shane Steichen, and Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.

Giants OC Mike Kafka will interview with the Arizona Cardinals for their vacant head coaching position, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson adds that the interview is scheduled for Tuesday.

Arizona is the fourth team to schedule an interview with Kafka, joining the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts.

The Panthers have filled their head coach vacancy, and the Texans are expected to hire DeMeco Ryans to fill theirs.

ESPN has also reported that the Denver Broncos have done some additional research on Kafka and other candidates, but there have been no reports of Kafka actually getting an interview in Denver.

Jan. 30, 8:49 a.m.

The Denver Broncos haven't yet expanded their search for a head coach, but they have done research on additional candidates, including Giants OC Mike Kafka, reports Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Kafka has interviewed with the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and Indianapolis Colts for their head coaching jobs so far.

The Panthers hired Frank Reich for their vacant spot, while the Texans are expected to hire San Francisco 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans.

That seemingly leaves the Colts and perhaps the Broncos as potential landing spots for Kafka.

Giants DC Wink Martindale also interviewed with the Colts for their head coach job.

Jan. 27, 12:50 p.m.

Giants quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney will interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their vacant offensive coordinator position, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Tierney came to New York with head coach Brian Daboll after he spent the past four seasons working on his staff with the Buffalo Bills, first as an offensive assistant (2018-19) before serving as the assistant quarterbacks coach (2020-2021). He also worked with the Giants head coach for two seasons at the University of Alabama (2016-17).

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is looking for a replacement after the team dismissed offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich following their playoff defeat to the Dallas Cowboys.

Jan. 27, 10:23 a.m.

Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale will head to Indianapolis and go through with his second head coaching interview with the Colts over the weekend, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The interview will take place on Saturday, according to SI's Albert Breer.

Martindale completed his first interview with the Colts on Jan. 22, the same day Giants OC Mike Kafka interviewed with them.

Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday is also scheduled for a second interview with Indy, as are Denver Broncos DC Ejiro Evero and Rams DC Raheem Morris, according to multiple reports.

The Giants face the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Jan. 16, 12:29 p.m.

The Indianapolis Colts have requested permission to interview defensive coordinator Wink Martindale for their vacant head coaching position, according to multiple media reports.

Martindale, 59, will likely not conduct his interview with the Colts this week ahead of Saturday's Divisional Round game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles as head coach Brian Daboll said "there won't be any interviews" this week when asked Monday about OC Mike Kafka interviewing for head coaching jobs.

Martindale joined the Giants staff this offseason from Baltimore where he was defensive coordinator from 2018-2021 and the linebackers coach from 2012-2017.

Jan. 16, 11:30 a.m.

Fresh off the Giants' first playoff win in 11 years, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has drawn interview requests to fill the head coaching vacancies, The Athletic's Dan Duggan reported on Monday.

The Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers have asked to speak with Kafka, 35, and they could interview him as soon as Tuesday, per Duggan. The Indianapolis Colts have also made a request for an interview, according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero.

Head coach Brian Daboll added later on Monday that the Giants' OC will not begin the interview process this week.

"He's not gonna do anything, everythings focused on Philadelphia," Daboll said. "So this is gonna be a normal week for him, for our offense. I know where his focus is. So there won't be any interviews leading up to this game."

Kafka came to New York last offseason after working in Kansas City since 2017 where he served as the quarterbacks coach (2018-2019) before adding passing game coordinator to his portfolio for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
