Las Vegas Aces break WNBA first-half scoring record in win over New York Liberty

The Las Vegas Aces are no stranger to scoring success in 2022. The Aces lead the WNBA in points per game with 90.6 and three of their players rank in the top 10 in scoring this season.

But Thursday's 108-74 win over the New York Liberty featured a different level of success. A record-breaking type. The Aces scored a WNBA-record 71 points in the first half, which beat the previous record of 69 set by the Phoenix Mercury in 2010. Vegas also became the only team to score at least 100 points in three consecutive games.

To boot, four Aces players — A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray and Riquna Williams — all scored in double figures. Wilson led the game with 25, while Plum scored 21, Gray scored 16 and Williams added 13. At halftime alone, Wilson had 20 points, Plum had 17 and Gray had 16. It was only the fourth time in WNBA history a team had three players score at least 15 points apiece in the first half, per ESPN.

Wilson also became the fourth WNBA player to score 25 points in less than 20 minutes and the only one to add four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Vegas wasn't just firing from the hip, either. The squad shot efficiently, as well. The Aces finished shooting 53%, including 48% from behind the arc. The quartet of Wilson, Plum, Gray and Williams shot at least 62.5% from the field and Plum, Gray and Williams went 10-of-17 from three.

The Aces hold a half-game edge over the Seattle Storm in the Western Conference, but might not be done breaking records. As Yahoo Sports' Cassandra Negley noted in May, the Aces have a shot to shatter five WNBA records: points per game, points per play, points per scoring attempt, offensive rating and starter's points per game.
