Larry Fitzgerald passes Terrell Owens for second on all-time receiving list

There hasn’t been much to celebrate this year — or for quite a few years, really — in Arizona, but there is this: franchise legend Larry Fitzgerald has just passed Terrell Owens for second on the NFL’s all-time receiving list.

Fitzgerald entered Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs with 15,902 total yards, 32 behind Owens’ total of 15,934. And with 50 yards on six receptions, Fitzgerald snared the record all for himself. The Cardinals fell to 2-7, losing 26-14 to the overwhelming Chiefs, but still: Fitzgerald has something good to remember on the afternoon.

Fitz and TO: similar careers

Owens played in 219 games over 15 seasons. Fitzgerald, also in his 15th season, is slightly behind that pace; the Kansas City game was his 227th. Like Owens, Fitzgerald has often been the marquee player on less-than-marquee teams.

It’s unlikely that Fitzgerald will come anywhere close to the top receiving mark, held by Jerry Rice. The 49ers icon totaled 22,895 yards over the course of his career; to hit that mark, Fitzgerald would need well over a thousand yards for another six seasons. But this mark ought to be enough to get him into Canton.
