Lane Kiffin continues to have Jimbo Fisher on his mind 24/7

It didn’t take long for Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin to make his way to the bird app (Twitter) and take over the college football media landscape for at least a couple of minutes, coming in a week late to comment on Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher’s quote regarding offensive play-calling last Monday. While discussing what went wrong offensively last season, Fisher narrowed it down to simple execution while discounting the lack of a complex scheme.

“It’s not scheme, it’s execution,” Fisher said, before doubling down on offensive schemes being similar around the country. “Everybody does the same thing. There’s not a hill of beans between anybody, as far as what goes on.”

Well, Lane Kiffin, who again responded more than a full week later took great offense to the quote, and even tagged Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, who I guarantee couldn’t care less.

Kiffin has been a thorn in Fisher’s side for the last year, and even though Jimbo refuses to embrace social media, leave it to Kiffin to believe that everything he says or retweets holds any merit beyond the Ole Miss fan base. Here’s what Kiffin tweeted in response to an article from USA TODAY writers Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams:

For anybody who has covered Jimbo Fisher’s press conferences over the years, this isn’t new, especially during his time at Texas A&M. Known as an “offensive guru” through most of his coaching career, it’s no surprise that the shine has worn off compared to his National Championship year at Florida State, but ever since arriving in College Station in 2018, Fisher hasn’t possessed a quarterback room with the talent and potential that sophomore Conner Weigman and backup Max Johnson present ahead of the 2023 season.

Yes, Fisher was very non-commital when asked about new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s role in play calling this season, but let’s be frank, this is a copycat league that thrives on speed and athleticism, and even though Kiffin is an offensive mastermind in his own right, imagine his 2022 team that nearly led the country in rushing last season without the production of running back Quinshon Judkins?

There’s no question that Jimbo Fisher’s future hinges on the success of the offense under Bobby Petrino’s guidance, but the 2023 roster is just too talented and experienced to repeat something even slightly close to the dismal 2022 campaign. Keep tweeting Lane, it’s what you do best.
