Lamar Jackson, in a lot of ways, hopes he's on the Patrick Mahomes track.
Mahomes didn't play much in his rookie season (just one game) before taking the controls in his second season in 2018. That year, his numbers exploded.
He threw 50 touchdown passes and tallied 5,097 yards as the Chiefs went to the AFC Championship Game. Mahomes was awarded league MVP for his breakout season. A year later, despite a slight dip in his statistics, he was a Super Bowl champion.
And this offseason, Mahomes signed a 10-year deal with the Chiefs that could be worth up to $503 million if fully met. Mahomes' deal was worth so much, in fact, he was able to become a part owner of the Kansas City Royals.
But Jackson isn't letting what could be down the line impact him just yet.
"My reaction – I've just got to win a Super Bowl," Jackson said Wednesday on a Zoom call with reporters. "I don't really focus on what he has going on, because I've still got to prove myself. When that time comes, then we can negotiate after the Super Bowl. But until then, I'm focused on winning right now."
Jackson is entering the third year of his four-year rookie deal. The Ravens will assuredly extend him for a fifth year, but after that, it's up to negotiating - his contract as one of the most valuable players in the league won't last forever.
Despite what could lie in the future for Jackson, he's still focused on victories before his contract comes.
"But like I said, when the time comes, then, yes," Jackson said. "But right now, I've got to focus on winning. I can't put that on my mind. You've got to win first. If you're not winning, then you won't be worried about no $500 million either."
