Lamar falls to Southwest 68-66 for district title

Feb. 24—No. 1 Southwest led No. 2 Lamar 53-45 entering the fourth quarter on Saturday night at Lamar High School for the Class 3 District 12 championship.

The Tigers brought themselves back but couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 68-66 in the end.

It was an 8-point advantage at halftime as well for the Trojans.

Both teams scored the ball well out of the gate as Southwest held a 23-20 lead after eight minutes of action.

Talon Timmons scored nine in that first quarter and made one 3-pointer while Ian Ngugi chipped in eight more to lead the charge for Lamar early on.

Jesse Holder led Southwest with seven points in the first frame.

Alex Wilkerson was vital for the Tigers during their comeback attempt in the fourth scoring 10 of the team's 21 points.

Holder led Southwest with 21 points and was joined in double figures by Brendyn Paulsen with 15 and Kenneth Pippin with 14.

Ngugi finished with a game-high 26 points while Wilkerson tallied 15 and Timmons finished with 13.

Lamar finishes with a 15-13 record while Southwest improves to 22-6 and advances to meet Greenwood in the Class 3 state sectionals on Tuesday.
