Lady Vikes come back for win

Mar. 26—MONTGOMERY — The No. 3 Barr-Reeve softball Vikings used a great relief effort from senior Karlye Graber, who shut down Mitchell with nine straight strikeouts to complete a come-back win on Tuesday. The Vikes came back after being down 3-0 early in the game with some timely hitting and taking advantage of Mitchell mistakes to garner a 6-3 win and start the year 2-0.

"I still feel like we're early in the season. I feel like we have a lot to work on yet. You know, it's early kids are still learning. We've got to come out and choose the right pitches to swing at. We've got to be aggressive at the plate. Overall though, the kids are doing great, great attitudes overall from everybody and very pleased. As we said, you've got a real luxury in being able to bring Karlye Graber in. Karlye does what she does and has for the last couple years and it's definitely a luxury that most teams and their you don't have. So it's a great tool to be able to use," said B-R coach Josh Huff.

Starting pitchers Kennedy Huff and Mitchell's Karsen Coleman each allowed runners in the first, but neither was able to convert into runs.

Huff began to deal in the second inning and quickly retired Mitchell in order. B-R again put runners on second and third in its half of the inning, but the game remained scoreless after two.

Mitchell picked up the game's first run in the top of the third as a pair of singles scored Mati Rosenberg and made it 1-0.

The Vikes put Sidney Wilson on with a walk in the bottom of the third, while Ava Carter also reached on a walk, but what looked like it might be an infield hit was ruled interference and B-R remained scoreless

However, with one runner on, freshman Devaney Roop went deep to left and gave the Mitchell a 3-0 lead on a windy afternoon, and those would be the final Mitchell runs of the day.

B-R finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Natalie Stoll doubled and scored as Lucy Witz reached on a dropped third strike and also scored on an error, making it 3-2.

Karlye Graber took over in the hill for Huff in the top of the fifth and struck out all three batters she faced.

B-R's Addi Jones then reached, and sacrifice from Ava Carter moved her to second. Huff added a single to tie the game and scored on a ball dropped from the center fielder gave the Vikes a 4-3 lead.

Graber was just as dominant in the sixth with her sixth straight K.

Paige Mullis came on for Mitchell in the circle after a lead off double from Willow Thompson. She then scored on a double from Wilson with an insurance run to make it 5-3. Wilson also scored to make it 6-3. Graber picked up three more strikeouts to pick up the win and move to 2-0.

The Vikes are on the road against Evansville Central on Thursday.
