Lady Stars top Athenians for third-straight win

Jan. 9—CRAWFORDSVILLE — The Western Boone girls basketball team is finding their stride.

The Lady Stars won their third-straight game for the first time this season on Tuesday night, topping Crawfordsville with a 61-38 to improve to 7-10 on the year.

"I was pleasantly surprised tonight — being back in school today, I wasn't sure how the girls would adjust and show up," Western Boone head coach Hannah Kelly said. "But they did a great job coming out from the get-go and executing our game plan. That led to a great team win."

Western Boone controlled things throughout, leading 18-6 after a quarter and 30-19 at the half.

They then put the game away in the third.

Crawfordsville didn't score on their first 10 possessions, turning it over seven times along with four missed field goals.

The Stars scored the first 13 points of the half to go up 24 and led by as many as 30 as they cruised to the win.

"The girls responded well in the second half," Kelly said. "We went into halftime kind of bummed how we played part of that second quarter where we were a little complacent. We discussed getting back into a zone and getting locked in and executing. We made some adjustments to our press and I think that got us kickstarted."

Western Boone had balanced scoring in the game.

Ally Lewis had 14 points, with Ila Stokes scoring 13 with three 3-pointers. Emmerson Gott had 12 points and nine rebounds, with Ki'erra Koch having 11 points and six rebounds.

Olivia Reagan chipped in seven points and nine rebounds.

"We are starting to click a little bit," Kelly said. "This year has been a big role adjustment year for a lot of our girls. We are finally getting comfortable with that and that is showing up on the court."

Western Boone will look for their fourth-straight win on Friday night at Frankfort.

The Stars have just five games left in the regular season.

"Frankfort doesn't give up, they are constantly fighting and play aggressive," Kelly said. "The girls know that and we have to keep doing the positive things that we have done the last couple of weeks, but also fine tune some of the other things we need to work on."
