Lady Rams take two from CHS

Mar. 23—Portales High's softball team visited Lady Wildcat Field for a doubleheader on Tuesday night, and two football games broke out.

The Lady Rams, playing their season-opening contests, put together six innings of four or more runs en route to a 17-13, 31-14 sweep of Clovis High.

PHS had two four-run innings and a seven-run frame in the opener. Trailing 15-6, the Lady Wildcats rallied for four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to make it close.

Senior Giselle Romero went 4-for-5 with two doubles for the Lady Cats, scoring four runs and knocking in five, while junior Brooke Renteria was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

In Game 2, the Lady Rams jumped on top with a six-run first and led 12-2 after 3 1/2 innings. Both teams scored eight runs in the sixth before PHS finished it off with 11 in the top of the seventh.

Romero led the Lady Cats, going 3-for-5 with a triple and a run scored.

Both teams were in Dexter's eight-team Lindsey Callaway tournament over the weekend, with the Lady Rams playing for third place on Saturday and the Lady Cats playing for fifth.

In Friday's semifinals, Loving posted a 14-5 win over Portales. Freshman Annaleah Lujan went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for PHS, while juniors Angel Ornelas and Myleigh Banda and sophomore Skyler Massey all added a pair of knocks.

In Thursday's first round, the Lady Rams punished the Dexter junior varsity 27-0 as Massey tossed three shutout innings in the circle and Ornelas contributed an inside-the-park home run.

Meantime, the Lady Cats (1-6) got their first win of the campaign on Friday, a 26-1 drubbing of the Dexter JV in the consolation semifinals. Renteria worked three innings in the circle, while Romero collected a three-run triple and sophomore Amor Soto added a two-run single.

The Lady Cats lost to Loving 14-0 in Thursday's quarterfinals.

Clovis faced Hatch Valley in Saturday's final round while PHS took on Raton.

The Lady Rams return to action on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Roswell High. Next up for the Lady Cats is a noon twin bill at home on Saturday against Roswell Goddard.
