Lady Rams edge Cavegirls in OT

Jan. 6—Evannie Fulfer hardly qualifies as a 3-point shooter, but she shot one with a lot of confidence in overtime on Friday night.

Senior guard Audrey Paden hit a 3-pointer less than 10 seconds into the OT and Fulfer added another on the next trip down, and Portales High's girls went on to a 47-41 victo4y over the Cavegirls in the Portales Shootout at the Ram Athletic Center.

Staring at a 12-point deficit late in the third period and with nothing seeming to work, it was all Portales could do to try to stay in it.

Junior guard Cameron Zumbrun's 3 in the first minute of the final stanza gave the Cavegirls a 35-24 lead, but they managed only one free throw the rest of regulation and PHS (10-4) forced OT on two free throws by junior guard Myleigh Banda with 32 seconds left.

Paden hit a 3-pointer off the tip in the OT before Fulfer — who made her first 3 of the season on Thursday night against Pojoaque — buried another on the next trip, and the Lady Rams never looked back.

"We've been working on our shooting in the mornings, and it's helped us a lot," said Fulfer, a junior forward who led the teams with 14 points. "We played our game, and we played a really solid game tonight."

Those were PHS' lone trifectas in the contest. After two early ties, the Cavegirls (8-3) led the entire way until Banda's tying free throws.

Portales changed early on from a man-to-man defense at the start of the tilt to a zone, trying to contain Cavegirls junior center/forward Jasmynn Gonzales.

"We want to play our style of ball, and tonight we did," Lady Rams coach Wade Fraze said. "We had to figure out what would be most effective against them. The girls did a tremendous job of communicating on defense, and that was key."

Fulfer scored the Lady Rams' first six points, then didn't score again until getting a couple of buckets in the final period.

"I think this was probably my best game," she said. "I felt really confident tonight."

Paden and junior guard Myleigh Banda each added 10 points for PHS, while Gonzales finished with a game-high 16 points for Carlsbad.

In Friday's early girls tilt, Las Vegas Robertson defeated Pojoaque 56-38.

The Lady Rams, who took on Robertson on Saturday to close out the event, return to action on Friday night in a 6:30 p.m. tipoff at Alamogordo.

Portales 45, Pojoaque 18 — Coming off a lopsided road loss on Tuesday to Texas Class 6A power Frenship, the Lady Rams jumped on Pojoaque right out of the box.

They held the Elkettes (5-8) to just one basket from the floor in building a 20-6 halftime lead. For the game, Pojoaque had only four field goals.

"It was a good all-around team effort, and it was nice to get that after Tuesday's game," Fraze said. "We're still learning to do things the right way."

Fulfer combined 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists for PHS, while Banda delivered 11 points. Junior guard Angel Ornelas added eight points, five rebounds, three assists and eight steals.

For the Elkettes, junior guard Jasmine Valdez tallied seven points.

In Thursday's early girls matchup, Carlsbad defeated Robertson 46-33.
