Lady Hornets fall in first game at Huntsville ISD Stadium

Feb. 5—HUNTSVILLE — With a new track being placed at Huntsville ISD Stadium, the girls' soccer program was delayed in getting to play at home.

That was until Friday night when the Lady Hornets hosted their first match inside the stadium against Kingwood Park.

While it was a happy moment to play at the new stadium, Huntsville fell short of the win as the Lady Panthers took home the 3-0 win.

"The atmosphere and just being able to have our stadium is nice," Huntsville coach Michael Van Wagner said. "It was an unfortunate loss but I thought we fought in the second half. I thought they played well and I'm looking forward to playing more home games here."

It was a tale of two halves though, K-Park opened the game scoring three points in the first 34 minutes of play. While K-Park held the 3-0 lead, a weather delay allowed the Lady Hornets to get into the locker room and talk pre-delay.

After the delay, Huntsville took back to the pitch and it was a different approach. The Lady Hornets held K-Park scoreless for the final 44 minutes of play. While the Lady Panthers couldn't score, Huntsville struggled to get things going offensively to put the ball in the net.

"We just needed a confidence boost and to get them going. They didn't play up to their level in the first half," Van Wagner said. "We pointed out a few things when we were inside and once we came back they started playing Lady Hornet soccer."

Huntsville's district season is young and they still have a long way to go till the end of district. To start district play, Huntsville grabbed a win over Lufkin to get points in the standings and allow themselves to add to them.

"We have to make sure we start each game how we finished this one," Van Wagner said. "We have to attack instead of trying to play catch."

The Lady Hornets will have a bye-week before returning to the pitch. The Lady Hornets will head to Nacogdoches for another district matchup and will return to Huntsville ISD Stadium on Feb. 16 against Porter.
