Lady Eagles claim 19th-straight sectional title

Feb. 5—ZIONSVILLE — The Zionsville girls swimming and diving team put on a dominate display on Saturday as they claimed their 19th-straight sectional title.

The Eagles scored 580 points, their second most ever, and cruised the title with 13 swims at next weekend's State Finals.

The Eagles started the meet with a title in the medley relay, with the team of Molly Simmons, Maddy Akin, Annabel Hermacinski and Maggie Hadley winning in 1:46.71.

The Eagles then went 1-2-3 in the 200-freestyle, with Annabelle Swiney winning in 1:49.70 and Ava Metzger placing second in 1:50.67. Both advanced to state. Kira Hunter was third in 1:55.86.

Zionsville went 1-2-4 in the IM, with Simmons winning in 2:06.94 and Akin placing second in 2:08.73. Both advanced to state. Hailey Paulick was fourth in 2:12.25.

They also went 1-2-4 in the 50-free, with Hadley winning in 24.55. Allie Buroker was second in 24.66 and Katie Gordon was fourth 25.25.

Swiney won the 100-free in 50.91 to advance to state. Paulick was second in 53.46 and Mia Phillip was third in 54.10.

The Eagles are sending two to state in the 500-free, with Metzger winning in 4:55.97. Hunter is also going after placing second with a time of 5:10.90. Ava Fleming was third in 5:25.07.

The Zionsville 200-yard freestyle relay team of Buroker, Hadley, Metzger and Swiney won in a time of 1:37.25.

Simmons won the 100-backstroke in a time of 56.17 to qualify for state. Ava Peterson was third in 59.65 and Delaney McAfee was fourth in 1:02.38.

Akin is heading to state in the breaststroke after winning the sectional title in 1:03.19. Buroker was fifth in 1:08.24 and Katie Gordon was sixth in 1:09.04.

The Eagles capped the sectional with a win in the 400-free relay, with the team of Metzger, Hadley, Simmons and Swiney winning in 3:30.60.

In the butterfly, Hermacinski was second in 59.13, with Peterson third in 59.70 and Claire McAfee placing fourth in 1:01.44.

The Lebanon team placed sixth with 145 points.

The medley relay team of Jessie Stevens, Anna Hale, Bea Johnson and Paige Howard placed fifth in 2:02.87.

Hale placed sixth in the IM in 2:23.41.

The 200-free relay team of Hale, Stevens, Howard and Johnson placed fourth in 1:50.11 and the 400-free relay team of Chiara Vitale, Madaline Luchetta, Martita Sheets and Kylee Rodriguez placed eighth in 4:43.41.

All three Zionsville divers qualified for the diving regional. Grace Whitfield won the sectional title with a score of 390.90. Emerson Stoner was third with a score of 348.95 and Cora Nichols was fourth in 327.45.
