Lady Buffs open season with win

Mar. 1—The Lady Buffs were determined to put on a great show for the fans on their home turf.

McAlester hosted Heavener in its home season opener on Friday at Hook Eales Stadium, taking a dominant 8-0 win over the Lady Wolves.

"We came out and started really well. We were a little bit inconsistent in the first half, which was our discussion at halftime," head coach Rashaud Buie said after the game.

"In the second half, I thought we played really well and dominated the game," he said.

McAlester wasted no time in taking a dominant possession of the ball and attempting to shoot goals. Jaycie Williams scored the first goal of the game five minutes into the first half, and would make her second goal of the game five minutes later — giving McAlester an early 2-0 lead.

Heavener tried to get the ball down the field, but McAlester's Kelsie Harden went to work blocking any chance of the ball getting past her. The entire defense line continuously kept the ball in buffalo goal territory, allowing Rihanna Kelly to score two goals and Makayla Misener to score one goal — giving McAlester the 5-0 lead at the half.

McAlester continued putting pressure on Heavener and searching for goal opportunities. Williams got the second half started with her third goal of the game. Continued efforts of Heavener getting down the field did no good as the Lady Buffs defense continued shutting them down at the center field line.

McAlester wouldn't allow Heavener any goals during the second half either. Fernanda Barajas and Vanessa Carranza each scored a goal during the second half, sealing the win for McAlester.

"The first game gives you something to build on. Overall, I thought we played well, so we can progress from this and fix the things we didn't do well, and hopefully build from it," Buie said.

Up next for McAlester, they will host Poteau on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
